Do BPO jobs pay extra for night shifts?

Contact centres and back offices serving clients in the UK, Europe, the US or Australia work to their clients' hours, so night and rotating shifts are common. Typical extras include:

  • Shift or night allowance: often LKR 5,000 to 20,000 a month (SalaryLK editorial estimate).
  • Transport: company transport or a transport allowance for late shifts.
  • Meals: subsidised or free meals on shift.
  • Performance and attendance bonuses: monthly or quarterly, linked to targets.
  • Language premium: agents with a second foreign language are paid more.

These benefits are set by each employer, so confirm them in writing. Compare evening and night work in other sectors in our part-time evening jobs guide.

Who hires for BPO jobs in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka's IT and business process management sector exported about US$1.45 billion in 2024. Long-established outsourcing operations in the country include WNS Global Services and HSBC, alongside local outsourcing firms. Telecom operators, banks and insurers also run large in-house contact centres with similar roles and pay.

Vacancies are advertised on topjobs.lk, LinkedIn and company career pages. Recruitment usually involves an English test, a voice or typing assessment and an interview. Legitimate employers never charge a fee to apply.

Is a BPO job better paid than other entry-level jobs?

For school leavers and fresh graduates without a specialist degree, BPO entry pay compares well with other common first jobs, mainly because of shift allowances and English-language premiums.

Data entry operator30,000 - 60,000

Ranges are SalaryLK editorial estimates except the minimum wage, which is the legal floor for full-time private-sector employees from 1 January 2026. See how these compare with the national picture in our average salary in Sri Lanka guide.

  3. Start as an associate: most team leaders and managers are promoted from within.
  4. Specialise: move into quality, training, workforce planning or MIS after two to three years.
  5. Add a qualification: AAT, CIMA or ACCA opens F&A KPO roles that pay noticeably more.
