IT and Software vs Banking

Most BA jobs in Sri Lanka are in two places: software companies, many of which build products or deliver projects for clients abroad, and banks and finance companies running core banking, digital channels and regulatory projects. The work is similar, but pay structures differ.

Employer typeEntry (LKR)Senior (LKR)
Software / IT services (offshore clients)100,000 - 150,000300,000 - 450,000+
Banks and finance companies80,000 - 130,000200,000 - 350,000

Local SMEs and consultancies70,000 - 110,000150,000 - 280,000

Software firms pay more cash and increase pay faster for strong performers, especially BAs who travel to or work closely with clients. Banks offer annual bonuses, concessionary staff loans and more stable hours. For broader context see software engineer salaries and banking industry salaries.

What a Business Analyst Does

A business analyst sits between the people who use a system and the people who build it. In a typical Sri Lankan software company a BA runs requirement workshops with the client, writes user stories and acceptance criteria, draws process and screen flows, answers developer questions during sprints and helps QA engineers plan testing. In a bank the same role is often tied to a specific area such as cards, loans, digital banking or regulatory reporting, and the BA works with branch, operations and compliance teams as well as the IT vendor.

Pay rises with how much of this the BA owns. A junior BA documents what others decide; a senior BA shapes the solution, handles difficult stakeholders and is trusted to speak to the client alone. That jump in responsibility, more than years of service, is what moves a BA from the LKR 150,000 band to the LKR 300,000+ band.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the salary of a business analyst in Sri Lanka?

Business analysts in Sri Lanka typically earn LKR 80,000-150,000 a month as an associate BA, LKR 150,000-280,000 as a BA with 2-5 years' experience, LKR 250,000-450,000 as a senior BA and LKR 400,000-700,000 as a lead BA. Software companies serving overseas clients pay at the top of these ranges.

What is the starting salary of an associate business analyst in Sri Lanka?

Fresh graduates joining as trainee or associate business analysts usually start at LKR 80,000-150,000 a month. Graduates with an IT or business information systems degree, a good internship and strong written English start at the higher end, especially in software companies.

Do IT business analysts earn more than banking business analysts?

Usually yes at mid and senior level. Software companies that build products or deliver projects for clients in the US, UK, Europe and Australia pay senior BAs LKR 300,000-450,000 or more, while banks typically pay LKR 200,000-350,000 for similar experience but add benefits such as staff loans, bonuses and job stability.

Which certifications increase business analyst salary in Sri Lanka?

The IIBA certifications are the best known: ECBA for entry level, CCBA for practitioners with experience and CBAP for senior BAs. Agile and Scrum certifications (such as Professional Scrum Product Owner) and the PMI-PBA also help. Certifications support promotion and job changes rather than adding a fixed amount to pay.

What is the salary of a senior business analyst in Sri Lanka?

Senior business analysts with 5-8 years' experience typically earn LKR 250,000-450,000 a month. Those who lead BA teams, act as product owners or work directly with overseas clients can earn more. See our senior business analyst salary guide for details.

How much tax does a business analyst pay in Sri Lanka?

APIT applies to monthly employment income above LKR 150,000, so most associate BAs pay little or no tax, while senior and lead BAs pay APIT at higher marginal rates. The employee also contributes 8% of gross salary to EPF.

Is business analysis a good career in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Business analysts are in steady demand in software companies, banks, insurers and telcos, and the role leads to product management, project management and consulting. It suits people who enjoy working with both business users and technical teams.

What qualifications do I need to become a business analyst in Sri Lanka?

Most employers ask for a degree in IT, computer science, business information systems, management or a related field. Strong written English, requirements documentation, process modelling and basic SQL are expected. Many BAs start as QA engineers, support analysts or developers and move across.

What is the difference between a business analyst and a data analyst salary?

Business analysts focus on requirements and processes, while data analysts focus on reports and data. Pay is similar at entry level, but business analysts in software companies often move faster into higher-paid product and project roles. See our data analyst salary guide for a comparison.
