Data Engineer Salary in Sri Lanka 2026
What data engineers earn from associate to lead, and the skills that raise pay
How much does a data engineer earn in Sri Lanka?
The data engineer salary in Sri Lanka is about LKR 120,000-200,000 a month for associates, LKR 200,000-350,000 for mid-level engineers and LKR 350,000-550,000 for seniors in 2026. What a data engineer does
Data engineers build and run the systems that move, clean and store data so analysts and data scientists can use it. Day-to-day work includes:
- Building batch and streaming pipelines (ETL and ELT) from apps, databases and third-party APIs
- Designing data warehouses and lakehouses and modelling tables for reporting
- Orchestrating jobs, monitoring data quality and fixing broken loads
- Managing cloud data services, costs, security and access control
- Working with data analysts and data scientists to make data usable
Salary by employer type
| Employer type | Mid-level (LKR) | Senior (LKR) |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore centres of foreign product companies | 250,000 - 400,000 | 400,000 - 650,000 |
| Local software product companies | 220,000 - 360,000 | 380,000 - 580,000 |
| IT services and consulting firms | 200,000 - 330,000 | 350,000 - 520,000 |
| Banks, telcos and large conglomerates | 180,000 - 300,000 | 300,000 - 480,000 |
Skills and certifications that raise pay
- Cloud data platforms. Hands-on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud data services is the single most common requirement in higher-paid adverts.
- Distributed processing. Apache Spark, Databricks and Kafka streaming separate senior engineers from SQL-only profiles.
- Modern warehouse tooling. Snowflake, BigQuery, dbt and Airflow appear frequently in roles serving foreign clients.
- Software engineering practice. Version control, testing, CI/CD and infrastructure as code are expected at senior level.
- Data modelling and governance. Designing clean, documented models and handling privacy and access rules matters more as you move toward lead roles.
Cloud certifications can help, particularly at services firms that bill clients by certified headcount. See the salary guides for the Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer and Microsoft Azure Data Engineer certifications, and the Apache Spark certification.
Data engineer vs related data roles
| Role | Entry (LKR) | Senior (LKR) |
|---|---|---|
| Data Analyst | 80,000 - 96,000 | 150,000 - 280,000 |
| Data Engineer | 120,000 - 200,000 | 350,000 - 550,000 |
| Data Scientist | 100,000 - 200,000 | 350,000 - 550,000 |
Data analysts mostly query and report on data that already exists, so their pay starts lower. Data engineers build the pipelines and platforms underneath, which needs stronger programming and cloud skills. Data scientists build models on top of that data. In practice the line between data engineer and analytics engineer is blurry at smaller companies, where one person often does both. For the operations side of databases, see the database administrator salary guide.
Public sector and state-owned organisations rarely advertise a "data engineer" title, and when similar work is done in government it is usually under IT officer or systems analyst posts on public service scales, which pay well below the private sector ranges on this page. Almost all data engineering jobs in Sri Lanka are in the private sector.
Career path
The usual ladder is Associate Data Engineer, Data Engineer, Senior Data Engineer, Lead Data Engineer, then Principal Engineer, Data Architect or Head of Data Engineering. Many data engineers start as software engineers or BI developers. Others move sideways into machine learning engineering or data platform and DevOps roles, which pay in a similar range.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the salary of a data engineer in Sri Lanka?
Data engineers in Sri Lanka typically earn LKR 120,000-200,000 a month at associate level, LKR 200,000-350,000 with two to four years of experience, and LKR 350,000-550,000 as senior data engineers. Lead data engineers earn about LKR 500,000-800,000, and principal engineers or data architects can exceed LKR 1,000,000. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates from 2025-2026 job adverts and industry pay ranges.
What is the starting salary of a data engineer in Sri Lanka?
An associate or junior data engineer usually starts at about LKR 120,000-200,000 a month. Graduates from computer science or engineering degrees with strong SQL and Python and an internship in data work are at the upper end. Many people also move into data engineering from software engineering or BI roles after one or two years, usually at a similar or slightly higher salary.
How much does a senior data engineer earn in Sri Lanka?
Senior data engineers with four to seven years of experience typically earn LKR 350,000-550,000 a month at local product and services companies. Those working for offshore teams of US, UK, Australian or European companies, or on high-volume streaming and cloud platforms, can earn more.
Is data engineer salary higher than data scientist salary in Sri Lanka?
They are close. Junior data scientists and junior data engineers start in a similar band, around LKR 100,000-200,000. At senior level, data engineers with strong cloud and platform skills often match or slightly exceed data scientists, because experienced data platform engineers are harder to hire. Both roles pay well above data analyst roles.
Which skills increase data engineer pay in Sri Lanka?
Cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), Apache Spark and Databricks, Kafka and streaming pipelines, Snowflake or BigQuery, Airflow or similar orchestration, dbt, infrastructure as code, and strong data modelling all push pay up. A recognised cloud data certification can help candidates stand out, especially for client-facing services roles.
Which companies hire data engineers in Sri Lanka?
Data engineers are hired by software product and services companies, offshore development centres of foreign firms, banks and finance companies, telcos, retail and FMCG groups with in-house analytics teams, and analytics consultancies. Many roles are hybrid and based in Colombo.
Can data engineers in Sri Lanka work remotely for foreign companies?
Yes. Data engineering is one of the easier tech roles to do remotely, and Sri Lankan engineers work for foreign companies as employees of local offshore centres, through employer-of-record arrangements or as contractors. Pay in those roles is often set in US dollars and can be well above local salaries, but it depends heavily on the contract and the client.
What qualifications do I need to become a data engineer?
Most employers ask for a degree in computer science, software engineering, IT, engineering or a related subject. The core skills are SQL, Python or Scala, data modelling, ETL or ELT pipelines and at least one cloud platform. Experience as a software engineer, BI developer or data analyst is a common stepping stone.
Is tax deducted from a data engineer salary in Sri Lanka?
Yes, at most levels. Employees contribute 8% of salary to EPF, and APIT applies to monthly income above LKR 150,000 at rising rates. Most associate data engineers pay little or no APIT, while senior and lead engineers pay a noticeable amount. The take-home table on this page shows estimates for each level.
