What does it cost to live in Dubai on a low salary?
The gap between gross pay and savings depends on what the employer provides. If housing and transport are included, a worker's main costs are food and a phone. If not, a bed space in a shared flat in areas such as Deira, Karama or Al Qusais is the biggest expense. Figures below are SalaryLK estimates for a single worker.
| Monthly cost | AED |
|---|---|
| Bed space or shared room | 500 - 1,000 |
| Food (cooking in shared housing) | 400 - 800 |
| Transport (metro, bus) | 150 - 350 |
| Phone and data | 50 - 150 |
| Total if housing is not provided | 1,100 - 2,300 |
A worker on AED 2,000 with free accommodation can often send home AED 1,000-1,500 (about LKR 90,000-135,000) a month. On the same salary without housing, savings can fall to a few hundred dirhams. Always ask whether housing, transport, food allowance and overtime are included before accepting an offer.
What is the Dubai job visa price in Sri Lanka?
Under the UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, Article 6), an employer cannot charge the worker or collect from them recruitment and employment costs. In practice this means the work permit, entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID and residence visa for a company job should be paid by the employer.
Costs you do pay in Sri Lanka include:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| SLBFE initial registration (Rs. 18,200 + VAT + SSCL) | Rs. 22,027 |
| SLBFE renewal (same employer, re-entry visa) | Rs. 4,599 |
| Registration at the Dubai consulate (if already in the UAE) | AED 230 |
| Passport, police report, certificates | Standard government fees |
SLBFE-licensed agencies are regulated by SLBFE. Ask any agency for a written breakdown of its charges and an official receipt, and check with SLBFE before paying. If someone asks for several lakhs of rupees for a "Dubai visa", treat it as a scam or an illegal visit-visa job.
How to Get a Dubai Work Visa from Sri Lanka
1. Find a job through a legal channel
Use an SLBFE-licensed recruitment agency, SLBFE job bank or a direct offer from a UAE employer. Check the agency licence on slbfe.lk before paying any money.
2. Get a written offer and MOHRE contract
The UAE employer issues an offer and an employment contract on the approved MOHRE form showing salary, allowances, hours and duration.
3. Employer applies for the work permit and entry permit
The UAE employer applies to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) for the work permit and obtains the employment entry permit. UAE law says the employer cannot charge the worker recruitment and employment costs.
4. Register with SLBFE before departure
Register your job with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment. The initial registration fee is Rs. 22,027 and includes SLBFE insurance cover for registered migrant workers.
5. Travel, medical test and Emirates ID
After arriving in the UAE, complete the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics arranged by the employer.
6. Receive your residence visa and start work
Once the residence visa is issued you start work. Your salary must be paid through the Wage Protection System at least once a month, and your employer cannot keep your passport.
Is it safe to go to Dubai on a visit visa for work?
No. Working in the UAE without a work permit is illegal, and the worker can be fined, detained and deported. Visit-visa job offers also skip SLBFE registration, so you lose the free SLBFE insurance and the support of the labour section at the consulate if things go wrong.
Your legal protections under UAE law include a contract on the approved form, salary paid at least monthly through the Wage Protection System, and a ban on employers keeping your passport. Report problems to MOHRE or the labour section of the Sri Lankan Consulate General in Dubai. If you are weighing Japan instead, our Japan SSW jobs and salary guide compares pay and tests.
Do Sri Lankans in Dubai pay tax?
The UAE does not tax employment income, so your contract salary is paid in full apart from any agreed deductions. Sri Lanka taxes residents on worldwide income, but a person living and working abroad for most of the year is usually non-resident for Sri Lankan tax. If you return and work locally, use our Sri Lanka tax calculator to see your APIT.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average Dubai salary for Sri Lankans?
Most Sri Lankan workers in Dubai earn AED 1,500 to 5,000 a month, about LKR 135,000 to 450,000 at roughly LKR 90 per dirham in October 2026. Labourers and cleaners start near AED 1,000-1,500, drivers and cooks earn AED 2,000-4,000, and professionals such as accountants, nurses and engineers earn AED 4,000-20,000.
What is the Dubai job visa price in Sri Lanka?
For a legal employment visa, UAE law says the employer cannot charge the worker recruitment and employment costs, so the work permit and residence visa should be paid by the employer. In Sri Lanka you pay the SLBFE registration fee of Rs. 22,027 plus your own passport and documents. Anyone selling a Dubai work visa for lakhs of rupees is a warning sign.
How do I get a Dubai work visa from Sri Lanka?
Get a job offer from a UAE employer, directly or through an SLBFE-licensed agency. The employer applies to MOHRE for your work permit and entry permit. You register with SLBFE before leaving, travel to the UAE, complete the medical test and Emirates ID, and receive your residence visa. The process usually takes a few weeks.
How much is 1 dirham in Sri Lankan rupees?
On 5 October 2026 the market mid-rate was about LKR 90 per UAE dirham. The dirham is pegged to the US dollar, so the rupee value moves with the USD/LKR rate. Banks and exchange houses pay slightly less than the mid-rate when you send money home, so check the rate on the day you remit.
Is there a minimum salary in Dubai for Sri Lankans?
The UAE has no general minimum wage for private-sector workers; pay is set in the employment contract. The salary in your MOHRE contract is the legal amount you must be paid, through the Wage Protection System. Read the contract carefully before you sign, and make sure the salary matches what the agency promised.
Can I work in Dubai on a visit visa?
No. Working without a valid work permit is illegal in the UAE, and workers caught can face fines and deportation. Some people travel on a visit or job-seeker visa to look for work, but they must switch to an employment visa before starting the job. A visit visa job also leaves you without SLBFE insurance and protection.
How much does SLBFE registration cost for a Dubai job?
The initial SLBFE registration fee is Rs. 22,027, which is Rs. 18,200 plus VAT and SSCL. Renewal when you return to the same employer on a re-entry visa costs Rs. 4,599. Workers already in the UAE can register at the Sri Lankan consulate in Dubai, where the fee is AED 230 for first registration.
How much can a Sri Lankan save in Dubai?
It depends mainly on whether the employer provides housing. A worker earning AED 2,000 with free accommodation and transport can often save AED 1,000-1,500 a month. If you pay for a bed space, food and transport yourself, living costs of AED 1,100-2,300 a month can take most of a low salary.
What jobs pay the most for Sri Lankans in Dubai?
Professional jobs pay the most: software engineers, civil engineers, nurses with a DHA licence, and qualified accountants. These typically earn AED 5,000-20,000 a month. Skilled trades such as heavy vehicle driving, cooking and electrical work pay more than general labour, and experience in the UAE raises pay when you change jobs.
