How much does an earth resources engineer earn in Sri Lanka?

Earth resources engineering graduates in Sri Lanka typically earn about LKR 70,000 to 220,000 a month in their first five years, based on our estimates. In government, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau's 2026 Mining Engineer notice used the MM 1-1 scale of Rs. 91,690 to Rs. 168,240 plus cost of living allowance.

How we checked this

  • We read the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau's 2026 vacancy notice for Geologist, Mining Engineer and Assistant Director posts.
  • We read the University of Moratuwa Department of Earth Resources Engineering website for the degree's scope and accreditation.
  • We checked these in October 2026. The GSMB scale is official; private-sector ranges are SalaryLK editorial estimates.

Earth resources engineering salary by experience

Most earth resources engineers work for private companies, so pay is set by the employer. These are our editorial estimates of monthly gross pay in Sri Lanka in 2026:

LevelMonthly (LKR)
Graduate or junior engineer (0-2 years)70,000 - 130,000
Engineer (3-5 years)130,000 - 220,000
Senior engineer or manager (6-10 years)220,000 - 400,000

Site-based roles at quarries and mines often add accommodation, meals or a site allowance, which can matter as much as the basic salary. Pay is highest at large construction, infrastructure and mineral export companies, and lowest at small quarries. For the job title most graduates hold, see our mining engineer salary page, and for the whole sector, mining industry salaries.

What does the GSMB pay mining engineers?

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, set up under the Mines and Minerals Act No. 33 of 1992, is the main government employer for this degree. Its 2026 notice called for a Geologist, Mining Engineer, Geophysicist, Seismologist and several Assistant Directors. All were placed on one scale under Management Services Circular 01/2025:

MM 1-1: Rs. 91,690 - 2,480 x 10 - 3,450 x 15 - Rs. 168,240, plus cost of living allowance and other approved allowances
Degree accepted (Mining Engineer)BSc specialised in Earth Resources Engineering, or in Mining and Minerals Engineering, recognised by the UGC
ExperienceAt least one year post-qualifying experience in mining
Age22 to 45 for external candidates
Provident fundEmployee 10% EPF; Bureau 15% EPF and 3% ETF
Other benefitsHospital medical insurance and outpatient bill reimbursement

The notice adds that, until 1 January 2027, pay for new recruits follows the phased amounts in Schedule II of Management Services Circular 01/2025. That means 2026 basic is below Rs. 91,690 at entry. We did not have the phased table for MM 1-1, so we have not quoted a 2026 figure. Note also that GSMB staff pay 10% EPF, not the 8% minimum used for most private employers.

Where do earth resources engineers work in Sri Lanka?

The degree is broad. The University of Moratuwa department lists mining, mineral exploration and processing, ocean resources, remote sensing and GIS, gem and jewellery, and petroleum engineering among its areas. In practice, graduates spread across these sectors:

SectorTypical rolesHow pay is set
Geological Survey and Mines BureauMining Engineer; Assistant Director (EIA and Regions)MM 1-1 scale, Rs. 91,690 - 168,240
Quarrying and aggregatesQuarry or mine engineer, blasting and productionPrivate, estimate in table above
Mineral productionMining, mineral processing and quality rolesPrivate or state company pay
Geotechnical and tunnellingSite investigation, rock and soil engineeringConstruction and consulting pay
Gem and jewelleryGem processing and testingVaries widely
Remote sensing and GISMapping, survey and data rolesPrivate or government pay

Geotechnical work is the biggest overlap with civil engineering, because every large building, road and tunnel needs ground investigation. Compare those salaries on the civil engineer salary and environmental engineer salary pages. Graduates with a geology focus compete with science graduates for geologist posts, and those drawn to oil and gas can read our petroleum engineer salary page.

How does the degree compare with other engineering fields?

The Moratuwa department says its degree is recognised by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka and accredited under the Washington Accord. That recognition lets graduates register as engineers. It also lets them work toward chartered status like any other engineering graduate, and it helps if they later seek mining jobs abroad.

The trade-off is market size. There are fewer local employers than for civil, electrical or computer engineering, so the first job can take longer to find. If you are choosing a field, our list of engineering faculties in Sri Lanka and the fresher salary guide by degree put the numbers side by side. Graduates who join a ministry rather than a statutory body follow the SLES scale on our government engineer salary page.

Our take: a niche degree that rewards site experience

From what we found, earth resources engineering pays in line with other engineering degrees once you are established. The GSMB scale starts at Rs. 91,690, above the Rs. 82,150 entry point of the government engineering service, and private senior roles can pass Rs. 220,000. The first two years are the hardest part, because the best-paid jobs, including the GSMB post, ask for mining experience first.

If we were graduating in this field, we would take a site job at a quarry, mine or geotechnical firm straight away, even at modest pay. One year of documented field experience is the entry ticket to the GSMB post and the better private roles. We would also register with the Engineering Council early, since it keeps the engineering career path open in Sri Lanka and abroad.
