How to Earn Money Online in Sri Lanka 2026
A practical plan: choose a skill, find clients on established sites, get paid through Sri Lankan banks and handle tax correctly
How can you earn money online in Sri Lanka?
The most reliable way to earn money online in Sri Lanka is to sell a skill, such as writing, design, tutoring or development, to clients on Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer.com or LinkedIn. Beginners typically earn LKR 15,000 to 50,000 a month. Payments arrive by bank wire, Payoneer or PayPal, and foreign income is taxed at up to 15%.
This page is about the process: getting started, getting paid and staying legal. For a list of job types and what each pays, see online jobs in Sri Lanka. Earnings figures here are SalaryLK editorial estimates, not promises.
Seven steps to start earning online
- 1
Choose one skill you can sell
Pick a service clients already pay for, such as writing, design, tutoring, video editing, bookkeeping or web development. Start with one service you can deliver well rather than offering everything.
- 2
Build three to five portfolio samples
Create real examples of your work: articles, designs, a short teaching video or a small website. Clients judge you on samples far more than on certificates.
- 3
Create profiles on established platforms
Set up free profiles on Upwork, Fiverr or Freelancer.com, and a complete LinkedIn profile. Check topjobs.lk for Sri Lankan companies hiring remote staff. Never pay anyone to unlock jobs.
- 4
Set up a way to receive payments
Open a savings account and, if you will earn foreign currency, a Personal Foreign Currency Account. Link a Payoneer account or a PayPal account through a partner bank so client payments reach you through the banking system.
- 5
Win your first clients at a fair starting price
Send short, specific proposals that answer the client's problem. Price slightly below established freelancers until you have reviews, then raise rates.
- 6
Register for tax and keep records
Obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number from the Inland Revenue Department, record every payment received and your work expenses, and file a return if your income passes the tax-free threshold.
- 7
Grow with repeat clients and higher rates
Ask satisfied clients for reviews and ongoing work, add a second related skill, and move from hourly gigs to monthly retainers for steadier income.

Which online earning websites are legitimate in Sri Lanka?
Stick to long-established platforms with public company details and payment protection:
- Upwork: hourly and fixed-price contracts with escrow; a service fee is deducted from earnings.
- Fiverr: you sell fixed packages; Fiverr keeps a share of each order.
- Freelancer.com: project bidding with milestone payments.
- LinkedIn: remote employment and direct client contacts.
- topjobs.lk: Sri Lanka's established job board, including remote and hybrid roles with local employers.
"Earning apps" that pay for watching ads, clicking links or completing tasks are not on this list for a reason: several have been named by the Central Bank as prohibited schemes.
How do you receive online payments in Sri Lanka?
Getting paid through the banking system keeps your income traceable for tax and visa applications, and avoids risky informal exchanges.
| Method | How it works | Points to know |
|---|---|---|
| Bank wire (SWIFT) | Client pays directly into your Sri Lankan bank account | Bank charges and exchange margin apply; good for larger, regular clients |
| Personal Foreign Currency Account (PFCA) | Holds foreign currency received through banking channels | Any person receiving inward remittances through banks can open one, per the CBSL Department of Foreign Exchange |
| Payoneer | Receives platform and client payments; you withdraw to a local bank | Widely used with Upwork and Fiverr; check fees before withdrawing |
| PayPal | Receive payments from abroad and withdraw to a linked bank account | Live with Sampath Bank and Commercial Bank for personal accounts since 2026; Bank of Ceylon listed as coming soon |
Use your real name and Sri Lankan address on every payment account. Accounts opened with false details can be frozen along with your balance.
Do you pay tax on online income in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Income that freelancers earned from foreign clients was exempt from income tax from 2020, but that exemption ended on 31 March 2025. From 1 April 2025, income from services provided from Sri Lanka and used outside Sri Lanka is taxed at a maximum of 15% for individuals.
- Tax-free threshold: the personal relief of LKR 1.8 million a year applies first.
- Business income: freelance income from several clients is treated as business income, so related expenses such as equipment and internet can be deducted.
- Local employer income: salary from a Sri Lankan employer is taxed through APIT; estimate it with our salary tax calculator.
- Registration: obtain a TIN from the Inland Revenue Department and keep records of every payment.
Tax rules change with each budget, so confirm your position with the Inland Revenue Department or a tax adviser. Also remember freelancers have no EPF or ETF; our freelance vs employee guide shows how much extra you need to earn to make up for it.
How to spot online earning scams
People searching for ways to earn money online are the main target of fake schemes. Sri Lanka Police list fake work-from-home jobs with registration fees and crypto or forex investment offers among the most common online frauds. Warning signs:
- Pay to start: registration fees, training packages, "activation" deposits or paid software.
- Task and "like and earn" schemes: small payouts for likes, reviews or ratings, followed by demands to deposit more to unlock tasks.
- Pyramid and crypto schemes: earnings from recruiting members or from daily "returns". Under Section 83C of the Banking Act these are prohibited, and the Central Bank named 24 companies and apps in a February 2026 public warning.
- Guaranteed income: fixed daily or monthly payouts for little work.
- Off-platform contact: a "client" who wants to move to Telegram before any contract, or asks for OTPs or bank logins.
Report pyramid schemes to the Central Bank's Financial Consumer Relations Department (hotline 1935), cyber incidents to Sri Lanka CERT at cert.gov.lk, and losses to the CID Cyber Crime Unit or your nearest police station.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I earn money online in Sri Lanka as a beginner?
Choose one sellable skill, such as writing, design, tutoring or data work, make a few samples and offer it first to people you know, then on Upwork, Fiverr or Freelancer.com. Most beginners earn LKR 15,000 to 50,000 a month in the first months. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates and no method guarantees income.
Can I earn money online in Sri Lanka without investment?
Yes. Freelance platforms and job boards are free to join, and fees are only taken from money you earn. You need a device, internet and a skill. Any scheme that asks you to deposit money, buy a package or recruit members to start earning is a warning sign, and many such schemes are illegal pyramid schemes.
What are the best online earning websites in Sri Lanka?
Established international sites are Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer.com for freelance work and LinkedIn for remote jobs. For Sri Lankan employers offering remote and hybrid roles, use topjobs.lk. Be wary of unknown "earning apps" that pay for clicks, views or tasks; the Central Bank has named several such apps as prohibited schemes.
How do freelancers receive money in Sri Lanka?
Common methods are a direct bank wire (SWIFT) into a Sri Lankan account, Payoneer withdrawals to a local bank, and PayPal, which can now receive cross-border payments when linked to a partner bank account at Sampath Bank or Commercial Bank. Foreign currency can be kept in a Personal Foreign Currency Account.
Can I receive money through PayPal in Sri Lanka?
Yes, from mid-2026. PayPal lists Sampath Bank and Commercial Bank as live partners for personal accounts, with Bank of Ceylon coming soon. You must link your PayPal account to an eligible bank account, and only payments from abroad can be received, not payments from other Sri Lankans.
Do I have to pay tax on online income in Sri Lanka?
Yes, above the tax-free threshold. From 1 April 2025, income from services provided from Sri Lanka to clients abroad is taxable, at a maximum rate of 15% for individuals. Freelance income is treated as business income, so related expenses can be deducted. Register for a TIN with the Inland Revenue Department and seek advice if unsure.
How much can I realistically earn online in Sri Lanka?
Beginners usually earn LKR 15,000 to 50,000 a month, steady freelancers LKR 50,000 to 150,000, and experienced developers, designers and marketers with foreign clients can earn LKR 150,000 to 300,000 or more. Income is irregular and depends on hours, skills and reviews. Treat any guaranteed figure as a scam signal.
Is crypto trading a good way to earn money online in Sri Lanka?
It is investing, not a job, and you can lose your money. Many offers sold as "crypto earning" are fraud: Sri Lanka Police list crypto and forex investment scams on Telegram and Facebook among the most common online frauds, and several crypto-linked apps appear on Central Bank pyramid scheme warnings.
How long does it take to start earning online?
With an existing skill, many people get a first small paid job within one to three months of setting up profiles and sending proposals. Building to a steady monthly income usually takes six months to a year of consistent work and reviews.
