Junior navy officer pay in 2026
The Navy's direct-entry officer notice, published in the Gazette of 11 September 2026, states that pay is made under Management Services Circular 10/2025, the 2025 armed forces salary revision. It lists the monthly pay for officers in every branch except medical:
| Item (Rs.) | Acting Sub Lt | Sub Lieutenant | Lieutenant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic salary | 65,731.00 | 74,438.00 | 86,601.00 |
| Cost of living allowance | 17,800.00 | 17,800.00 | 17,800.00 |
| Uniform allowance | 525.00 | 525.00 | 525.00 |
| Additional special allowance | 3,000.00 | 3,000.00 | 3,000.00 |
| Additional allowance | 1,000.00 | 1,000.00 | 1,000.00 |
| Ration allowance (where applicable) | 34,846.80 | 34,846.80 | 34,846.80 |
| Total | 122,902.80 | 131,609.80 | 143,772.80 |
The ration allowance of Rs. 34,846.80 is paid only to officers who are "victualled out", meaning they do not take meals in the mess. An officer living and eating on board or in a naval base receives food in kind instead, so the cash figure would be about Rs. 34,800 lower. Qualification pay of up to Rs. 637.50 a month is added where it applies.
What is the Sri Lanka Navy ranks salary list?
The Navy does not publish gross pay for ranks above Lieutenant in its recruitment notices. The three forces share equivalent rank structures and are revised together, and the Army's 2026 professional officer notice publishes gross pay for every rank up to Major General. The table uses those army figures for senior navy ranks as a guide. Junior navy totals run about Rs. 5,800 below the army equivalents, so treat the senior figures as approximate.
| Navy rank | Army equivalent | Gross monthly (Rs.) |
|---|---|---|
| Midshipman / Officer Cadet | Officer Cadet | Training allowance; not published |
| Acting Sub Lieutenant | - | 122,903 (navy gazette) |
| Sub Lieutenant | Second Lieutenant / Lieutenant | 131,610 (navy gazette) |
| Lieutenant | Captain | 143,773 (navy gazette) |
| Lieutenant Commander | Major | about 158,419 |
| Commander | Lieutenant Colonel | about 165,776 |
| Captain | Colonel | about 189,556 |
| Commodore | Brigadier | about 201,980 |
For the full army rank list, including soldiers and NCOs, see the army ranks salary list and commando pay page, and the army officer salary guide.
How much did the 2025 revision raise navy pay?
The Presidential Expert Committee on public sector salaries set rank-by-rank increases in basic pay for all three forces from 1 January 2025. As reported in September 2024, the monthly basic increase for officer ranks was:
| Rank (navy name) | Increase in basic (Rs.) |
|---|---|
| Officer Cadet | 13,500 |
| Midshipman | 13,870 |
| Sub Lieutenant | 28,855 |
| Lieutenant | 37,045 |
| Lieutenant Commander | 42,505 |
| Commander | 44,175 |
| Captain | 58,095 |
| Commodore | 62,555 |
| Rear Admiral / Vice Admiral / Admiral | 71,000 / 76,300 / 84,700 |
These were recommended increases in basic pay, not new salaries, and how much of each is paid in a given year depends on the forces' own salary instructions. The civilian public service revision is being paid in stages and reaches its full rates in January 2027, so check the latest navy notice for current figures rather than adding these amounts to old pay.
How much do navy doctors and dental officers earn?
Medical branch officers receive a separate package, including a Rs. 70,000 duty interruption, attendance and transport allowance. Totals below come from the same 2026 gazette:
| Medical grade | Basic (Rs.) | Total monthly (Rs.) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Grade | 84,574 | 203,914 |
| Grade II (Medical) | 90,673 | 210,015 |
| Grade II (Dental) | 82,547 | 201,553 |
| Grade I | 111,193 | 232,977 |
| Specialist Grade | 136,575 | 263,425 |
That compares well with a civilian government medical officer salary, though navy doctors accept postings to ships and naval bases anywhere in the country.
How do you become a navy officer in Sri Lanka?
- Officer cadet (school leavers). The Navy recruits cadets aged 18 to 22 with three A/L passes at one sitting that meet university entrance requirements. Cadets train at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee and at sea, and are commissioned as officers after training.
- Direct entry (graduates and professionals). The September 2026 notice offered regular and five-year short service commissions in the executive, marine, hull, automobile, electrical and electronic and civil engineering, logistics, medical, dental, IT and health administration branches. All applicants needed three A/L passes at one sitting and six O/L passes including Mathematics with credits in mother tongue and English.
- Branch qualifications. For example, the Executive branch asked for a science or engineering technology degree and an age below 30, while Marine Engineering entrants, commissioned straight in as Lieutenants, needed a four-year marine or mechanical engineering degree, IESL membership and an age below 32.
- Physical standards and selection. Men need a height of 5 feet 6 inches and a 32-inch chest, women 5 feet 3 inches, with a BMI of 17 to 27. The endurance test for men in 2026 was 12 push-ups, 10 curl-ups and a 1,600 m run in 9 minutes. Interviews, security checks and a medical follow.
Officers who leave during training must refund training costs, and the notice warns that officers can be posted anywhere in the world. If a maritime career appeals but not the forces, compare with how to become a ship captain. Other uniformed careers include the police SI and ASP.
Benefits beyond the salary
- + Free medical care for the officer, spouse, children and dependants.
- + Free uniforms, plus accommodation and food during training.
- + Three sets of holiday railway warrants a year and monthly travel home.
- + Rent allowance of Rs. 3,200 to Rs. 8,500 for married officers without quarters.
- + Official car with driver from the rank of Commander.
Armed forces pay is not subject to EPF, and only income above Rs. 150,000 a month attracts APIT. For how forces pay compares with civilian state jobs, see the government salary scale 2026 and government vs private salaries.

Yes. A newly commissioned Sub Lieutenant receives about Rs. 131,610 a month, well above sailors and junior non-commissioned ranks. For sailors and the navy as an employer, see our separate Sri Lanka Navy salary overview, which covers ratings from recruit to Chief Petty Officer.
