What are the best part time jobs in Colombo for students?

For students, the job that fits your timetable matters more than the hourly rate. We would rank the options like this:

  • Tutoring: the best pay per hour if you did well in a subject, and the hours fit around lectures.
  • Weekend events and promotions: paid by the day, easy to drop during exams.
  • Evening cafe or restaurant shifts: regular income and real customer service experience for your CV.
  • Online freelance work: design, writing or social media tasks you can do from your room.

What is the minimum wage for part time work?

The National Minimum Wage of Employees (Amendment) Act No. 11 of 2025 sets the national minimum wage that applies from 1 January 2026.

Minimum wageBefore Jan 2026From 1 Jan 2026
MonthlyRs. 27,000Rs. 30,000
DailyRs. 1,080Rs. 1,200

For a daily-paid part-time job, Rs. 1,200 for a full day is the legal floor. Most Colombo event and retail day rates are above it. If you are on the payroll as an employee, ask whether EPF and ETF are paid; our EPF and ETF calculator shows what that adds up to.

Our take: protect your time, then your pay

For most students in Colombo, we would cap paid work at about 15 hours a week during semesters. Above that, results usually suffer, and the extra LKR 10,000 a month is rarely worth a repeated exam.

We would also pick one job that builds a skill, such as tutoring, design or customer support, over a slightly better-paid job that teaches nothing. And never pay to get a part-time job. Registration fees, kit deposits and paid "task" schemes are the most common traps we see in Colombo adverts.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best part time jobs in Colombo?

The most common part time jobs in Colombo are tutoring, cafe and restaurant work, hotel banquet and event shifts, promotions, weekend retail, delivery riding, call centre shifts and online freelance work. Tutoring and freelance skills pay the most per hour, often LKR 1,000 or more, while service jobs pay around LKR 250 to 400 an hour or LKR 1,500 to 4,000 a day.

What are good part time jobs in Colombo for students?

For students, the most flexible part time jobs in Colombo are tutoring younger pupils, weekend event and promotion work, evening cafe or restaurant shifts, and online freelance tasks you can do between lectures. Event and promotion jobs pay by the day and fit around exam periods. Tutoring pays best if you have strong O/L or A/L results in a subject.

How much do part time jobs in Colombo pay?

Our estimates are LKR 250 to 500 an hour for cafe, retail, office and call centre work, LKR 1,500 to 4,000 a day for event, promotion and weekend retail jobs, and LKR 1,000 to 2,500 an hour for tutoring. Working 15 to 20 hours a week, most students earn LKR 15,000 to 40,000 a month. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates.

Is there a minimum wage for part time jobs in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Under the National Minimum Wage of Employees (Amendment) Act No. 11 of 2025, the national minimum wage from 1 January 2026 is Rs. 30,000 a month or Rs. 1,200 a day. A daily-paid worker should therefore get at least Rs. 1,200 for a full day. The Commissioner General of Labour has said all employers are legally bound by it.

Where can I find part time jobs in Colombo?

Look on topjobs.lk and LinkedIn for retail, hospitality and call centre roles, on Facebook job groups for event and promotion work, and on university notice boards and career guidance units. Walk-in applications still work well at cafes, restaurants and shopping malls. For online work, freelance platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr are free to join.

Can I work part time while studying at university in Colombo?

Yes. There is no general legal bar on students working part time in Sri Lanka, but check your university or course rules, especially for scholarship or hostel students. Most students manage 10 to 20 hours a week without hurting their results. We suggest weekend and event work during semesters and longer shifts during holidays.

Do part time workers in Colombo get EPF?

If you are on an employer's payroll as an employee, EPF and ETF contributions can apply even when you work part time, and the employer must add 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top of your 8%. Casual day-rate work through agencies and freelance gigs often have no EPF. Ask before you start and keep your payslips.

How can I avoid part time job scams in Colombo?

A real job pays you; it never asks you to pay first. Walk away from adverts that ask for a registration fee, a deposit for a uniform or kit, or money to unlock tasks on WhatsApp or Telegram. Be careful with "like and earn" or product rating jobs, which are a common online fraud. Meet employers at their workplace, not at private locations.

Are there evening part time jobs in Colombo?

Yes. Restaurants, cafes, hotel banquets and call centres serving foreign clients all need evening staff, and delivery demand peaks at dinner time. Evening tutoring is also common because pupils are free after school. Plan safe transport home before you accept a late shift, and ask whether the employer provides transport for night work.
