How much do bank jobs pay in Sri Lanka?
Bank salaries in Sri Lanka start at a Rs. 55,000 monthly allowance for a first-year BOC trainee staff assistant. By our estimate, permanent banking assistants earn LKR 55,000-100,000, and branch managers LKR 130,000-280,000 at state banks or LKR 180,000-380,000 at private banks. Senior managers reach LKR 600,000.
How we checked this
- We read the 2025 BOC Trainee Staff Assistant notice, the 2025 People's Bank Customer Service Assistant notice and the 2026 People's Bank Management Trainee notice.
- We read the Central Bank's 2025 Banking Assistant (Trainee) notice for comparison.
- Checked in October 2026. Trainee allowances are official figures from those notices. Every salary after training is a SalaryLK editorial estimate; no Sri Lankan bank publishes its full scale.

| Banking assistant / staff assistant | 70,000 - 100,000 | 55,000 - 95,000 | 2-6 |

| Regional / senior manager | 300,000 - 600,000 | 300,000 - 600,000 | 15+ |
Two rows are official: BOC's Rs. 55,000 (year one) and Rs. 70,000 (year two) trainee allowance, and People's Bank's Rs. 100,000 management trainee allowance. The rest are our estimates. Bonuses at profitable banks can add the equivalent of one to several months' pay a year; the sector overview is in banking industry salaries.
What is the banking assistant salary at entry?
Most people join a bank straight after A/L as a trainee. BOC pays a fixed training allowance for two years and then confirms trainees as Staff Assistant Grade I. People's Bank uses a two-year training contract for Customer Service Assistants with a monthly allowance; its 2025 notice did not state the amount.
Private banks hire trainee banking assistants on similar terms. Our estimate for a private bank trainee is LKR 45,000-65,000, rising to LKR 55,000-95,000 once permanent. Counter and cash work is covered in our bank teller salary guide.
What does a bank manager earn in Sri Lanka?
Managers are where state and private banks part ways. Our estimate is LKR 130,000-280,000 for a state bank branch manager, including BOC and People's Bank, and LKR 180,000-380,000 at private commercial banks. Large branches and regional roles sit at the top.
Cash pay is only part of it. Concessionary housing and vehicle loans are a large benefit for bank managers, and they are worth valuing when you compare offers. Grade-by-grade detail is in our bank manager salary guide.
How do bank recruitment exams work?
State banks recruit through open exams advertised on their websites and in newspapers. These are the formats in the most recent notices we read. Requirements change between intakes, so always check the current notice.
| Recruitment | Qualifications | Age | Exam |
|---|---|---|---|
| BOC Trainee Staff Assistant (2025) | O/L 6 subjects, 5 credits incl. mother language, maths, English; 3 A/L passes | 24 or below | Paper I: General Knowledge, IQ and IT. Paper II: English. Selection on interview marks. |
| People’s Bank Customer Service Assistant (2025) | O/L 6 subjects, 5 credits incl. maths, English, Sinhala/Tamil; 3 A/L passes | 18-23 | One paper: 50 MCQs, 1 hour, 100 marks (banking, IT, GK, numerical, IQ, aptitude) |
| People’s Bank Management Trainee (2026) | Degree with Second Upper or First, or GPA 3.5+ | 18 to under 28 | Paper I: English. Paper II: analytical, IQ and psychometric |
| CBSL Banking Assistant (Trainee) (2025) | O/L 6 subjects, 5 B passes; A/L three B passes | 18-22 | Dept of Examinations test: General Intelligence, Numerical Skills, Comprehension (100 marks each) |
Note the BOC detail: the written exam only builds the shortlist, and final selection rests on interview marks. The Central Bank is a regulator rather than a commercial bank, but its trainee post pays an all-inclusive Rs. 65,000 a month for two years, so it is worth adding to your list. Graduate entry is covered in our management trainee salary page.
Which qualifications raise bank pay?
- + Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka diplomas (DBF, then DABF), which People's Bank lists among accepted qualifications.
- + A degree in finance, accounting, economics or management for the graduate entry route.
- + Professional qualifications such as CIMA, ACCA, CA Sri Lanka or CFA for credit, treasury and risk roles.
- + Passing internal promotion exams on time.

Our take: which bank job should you aim for?
If you have good O/L and A/L results and are under 24, the BOC trainee exam is the clearest entry we found: a published allowance, a two-year path to a permanent post and state bank security. Apply to People's Bank and private banks in the same year, because intakes are irregular.
If you are heading to university, the graduate route is faster. A Rs. 100,000 management trainee allowance and absorption as Assistant Manager skips roughly a decade of the A/L ladder. You need a strong class or GPA, though.
Whichever route you take, start the IBSL diploma early. In our reading of the notices, it is the one qualification that helps at every grade. School leavers comparing options should also see jobs after A/L in Sri Lanka, and you can check net pay on any offer with our EPF and ETF calculator.

What is the BOC bank manager salary?
Bank of Ceylon does not publish its manager salary scale. Our estimate for branch managers at state banks, including BOC, is LKR 130,000-280,000 a month with allowances. State bank managers also receive staff benefits such as concessionary loans. Treat any exact BOC figure you see online as unverified unless it comes from the bank or a collective agreement.
What is the banking assistant salary in Sri Lanka?
BOC’s 2025 recruitment notice set the trainee staff assistant allowance at Rs. 55,000 a month in year one and Rs. 70,000 in year two. After confirmation, our estimate for a permanent banking assistant is LKR 70,000-100,000 at state banks and LKR 55,000-95,000 at private banks. Private banks usually start trainees at LKR 45,000-65,000.
What qualifications do I need for a bank job after A/L?
The 2025 BOC and People’s Bank notices both asked for six O/L subjects at one sitting with five credit passes including mathematics and English, plus three A/L passes. BOC set an age limit of 24 or below and People’s Bank 18 to 23. Private banks set their own requirements but look for similar results and good English.
What is in the BOC trainee staff assistant exam?
The 2025 BOC notice listed two papers. Paper I covered General Knowledge, IQ and IT, and Paper II was English Language. Exam marks were used only to shortlist candidates; final selection was based on interview marks. Trainees serve two years on a training allowance and are then confirmed as Staff Assistant Grade I.
How much does a People’s Bank management trainee earn?
The People’s Bank 2026 management trainee notice offered a monthly allowance of Rs. 100,000 during a two-year training contract. Successful trainees are absorbed into the permanent staff as Assistant Managers. Applicants needed a degree with a Second Class Upper or First Class, or a GPA of at least 3.5, and had to be under 28.
Do state banks pay more than private banks?
At entry, state banks are often equal or better: BOC’s published trainee allowance is above what many private banks pay new trainees, by our estimate. At manager level private banks usually pay more in cash and bonuses. State banks tend to offer stronger job security and staff loan benefits.
Do bank employees get EPF?
Private bank employees are in EPF: the bank deducts 8% and contributes 12%, plus 3% ETF. State banks have their own provident and retirement arrangements, which depend on the bank and when you joined, so check the offer letter. Bank staff pay APIT on monthly income above LKR 150,000.
How long does it take to become a bank manager in Sri Lanka?
From A/L entry as a trainee, most staff take 12 years or more to reach branch manager, passing internal promotion exams and banking qualifications along the way. Graduate management trainees start as assistant managers after two years and can reach branch manager faster. The Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka diplomas help at every step.
