Private School Teacher Salary in Sri Lanka 2026
What local private schools and international schools pay teachers, and how that compares with the government scale
How much does a private school teacher earn in Sri Lanka?
Most private school teachers in Sri Lanka earn LKR 40,000 to 120,000 a month in 2026, by our estimate. New teachers in local private schools start near LKR 40,000-70,000. Experienced subject teachers at leading Colombo international schools earn LKR 100,000-200,000, and heads of department up to about LKR 350,000.
How we checked this
- We read the government teacher scales in Public Administration Circular 10/2025 and the amounts paid in 2026.
- We read the Auditor General's 2022 performance audit on non-government schools for how private and international schools are funded and registered.
- We checked the 2026 national minimum wage in Act No. 11 of 2025.
- All figures checked in October 2026. Private and international school pay ranges are SalaryLK editorial estimates, because schools do not publish scales.
Private vs international vs government teacher salary
This is the comparison most teachers ask us for. The government row uses official figures; the private rows are our estimates of gross monthly pay.
| School type | Starting pay | Experienced | Retirement | How you get in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Government school (SLTS) | Rs. 67,686 - 77,304 (2026, incl. COLA) | Up to Rs. 157,380 basic + COLA | Pension, no EPF | Gazette exam or NCOE |
| Assisted private school | Government scale for approved posts | Government scale | As per approval | School + ministry approval |
| Non-assisted private school | LKR 40,000 - 70,000 | LKR 60,000 - 110,000 | EPF 8% + 12%, ETF 3% | School interview, demo lesson |
| Smaller international school | LKR 40,000 - 90,000 | LKR 70,000 - 140,000 | EPF 8% + 12%, ETF 3% | School interview, demo lesson |
| Leading Colombo international school | LKR 80,000 - 120,000 | LKR 100,000 - 200,000 | EPF, ETF, often bonus | Interview, subject test, demo |
The government figures come from the GE 1-2025 and GE 2-2025 scales. A new Grade 3-II teacher is paid Rs. 49,886 basic in 2026 and a graduate teacher at Grade 3-I(a) Rs. 59,504, each plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance. Our full breakdown by grade is in the teachers salary scale 2026 guide, and the wider picture is in government teacher salary in Sri Lanka.
What do private school teachers earn by experience?
We built these bands from vacancy adverts and the pay structures schools describe when they hire. They are gross monthly salaries before the 8% EPF deduction.
| Level | Experience | Monthly (LKR) |
|---|---|---|
| New teacher, local private school | 0-2 years | 40,000 - 70,000 |
| Experienced private school teacher | 3-10 years | 60,000 - 110,000 |
| International school subject teacher | 2-8 years | 80,000 - 160,000 |
| Senior teacher, leading international school | 8+ years | 150,000 - 220,000 |
| Head of department / section head | 10+ years | 200,000 - 350,000 |
The spread is wide because there is no common scale. Two schools in the same town can be LKR 30,000 apart for the same subject. Science, maths, ICT and English teachers are at the top of every band; primary and aesthetic subjects sit lower. For subject-specific figures, see our computer teacher salary page.
Which private schools are paid by the government?
This surprises many applicants. Sri Lanka has a small group of "government-approved private schools" that survived the 1960-61 school takeover. The Auditor General's performance audit counted 80 of them at 31 December 2020. Of these, 47 received state assistance for teachers' salaries and 33 were non-assisted.
In an assisted school, approved teachers are paid by the state, so their pay follows the government scale. In a non-assisted school, the school pays from its own fees and sets its own salaries. When a vacancy advert says "private school", we would ask straight away which group the school is in and whether the post is an approved cadre post.
Sinhala medium private school vacancies in 2026: what pay to expect
Sinhala medium posts come mainly from government-approved private schools and from smaller schools that teach the national curriculum alongside an English stream. Our estimate for a new graduate or NCOE-trained teacher in a non-assisted school is LKR 40,000-70,000 a month. An experienced A/L subject teacher can reach LKR 80,000-110,000.
Compare any offer against the government figure of about Rs. 77,304 a month for a new graduate teacher, plus a pension. If a private offer is below that, you are trading pay and security for location or quicker hiring. The usual entry routes are set out in how to become a teacher in Sri Lanka.
How much do international school teachers earn in Sri Lanka?
International schools are the top end of private teaching pay, but only at the larger schools. The 2022 audit found that international schools register as companies under the Companies Act No. 07 of 2007 or as business names, without Ministry of Education approval. Each sets its own pay.
Our estimates: LKR 40,000-90,000 at smaller international schools, LKR 100,000-200,000 for experienced Cambridge, Edexcel or IB subject teachers at the leading Colombo schools, and LKR 200,000-350,000 for heads of department. Teachers recruited from abroad are usually on separate packages, which we do not cover here.
Early years staff are paid less; see the Montessori teacher salary guide for pre-school pay.
What raises a private school teacher's pay?
- + A subject degree plus a PGDE, rather than an A/L or diploma alone.
- + Experience teaching the Cambridge or Edexcel syllabus with good exam results.
- + Teaching in English medium, which opens the international school market.
- + High-demand subjects: physics, chemistry, maths, ICT and English.
- + Coordinator or head of department roles, which carry an allowance.
Tuition is the other lever. Strong A/L teachers often earn more from evening classes than from the school; our A/L tuition classes in Colombo page shows what that market looks like.
Our take: who should choose a private school job?
If you hold a degree and can wait for a government recruitment exam, the government job usually wins on total value: a fixed scale, the cost of living allowance and a pension. A local non-assisted private school rarely beats it on pay.
Private schools make sense in two cases. First, if you need a job now and want classroom experience while you wait for a gazette. Second, if you teach a high-demand subject in English, where the leading international schools pay well above the government scale.
Before you sign, we would check three things: whether EPF and ETF are paid on the full salary, how many periods a week you teach, and whether the contract limits private tuition. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the private school teacher salary in Sri Lanka?
Our estimate is LKR 40,000 to 120,000 a month for most private school teachers in 2026. New teachers in fee-levying local-syllabus schools usually start at LKR 40,000-70,000, experienced teachers reach LKR 60,000-110,000, and subject teachers at larger international schools earn LKR 80,000-160,000. Schools do not publish pay scales, so these are SalaryLK editorial estimates.
What salary do Sinhala medium private school vacancies in 2026 offer?
Sinhala medium vacancies in private schools that follow the national curriculum usually offer LKR 40,000-70,000 a month to a new teacher, rising with experience and qualifications. If the school is one of the government-assisted private schools, approved teachers can be paid on the government teacher scale instead. Always ask which arrangement applies before you accept an offer.
How much does an international school teacher earn in Sri Lanka?
Our estimate is LKR 40,000-90,000 a month at smaller international schools and LKR 100,000-200,000 for experienced Cambridge, Edexcel or IB subject teachers at the leading Colombo schools. Heads of department at those schools can reach LKR 200,000-350,000. Pay depends heavily on the subject, the curriculum and your English fluency.
Do private school teachers earn more than government teachers?
Not at the start, in most cases. A new graduate government teacher is paid Rs. 59,504 basic plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance in 2026, about Rs. 77,304 a month, with a pension. Many local private schools pay less than that. Leading international schools pay more, especially for science, maths and English teachers with experience.
Are private school teachers paid by the government?
Some are. The Auditor General counted 80 government-approved private schools at the end of 2020, of which 47 received state assistance for teachers’ salaries and 33 did not. Approved teachers in assisted schools are paid by the state. Teachers in non-assisted private schools and in international schools are paid by the school from fees.
Do private school teachers get EPF and ETF?
Yes. Teachers employed by a private school or an international school company are private-sector employees, so the school must deduct 8% EPF from their salary and pay 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top. Government teachers do not get EPF; they are pensionable and contribute to the widows’ and orphans’ pension scheme instead.
What qualifications do I need to teach at a private school?
Most private schools ask for a degree in the subject or a National Diploma in Teaching, and many prefer a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. International schools look for strong English, subject knowledge of the Cambridge or Edexcel syllabus and, for senior posts, prior experience with those exams. A/L-only applicants are sometimes hired as assistant or primary teachers on lower pay.
Who regulates international schools in Sri Lanka?
According to a 2022 Auditor General performance audit, international schools are registered as companies under the Companies Act No. 07 of 2007 or as business names, without prior approval from the Ministry of Education, and are not monitored by it. That means there is no common pay scale, so salaries vary widely between schools.
What is the minimum salary a private school can pay a teacher?
A full-time private school teacher is covered by the national minimum wage, which is LKR 30,000 a month from 1 January 2026 under the National Minimum Wage of Workers (Amendment) Act, No. 11 of 2025. In practice most schools pay above this for qualified teachers, but some small schools make offers close to it.
Can private school teachers earn extra from tuition?
Many do. Private school teachers often run evening or weekend classes, and A/L subject teachers with a good reputation can earn more from tuition than from their salary. Check your contract first, because some international schools restrict teachers from tutoring their own students for a fee.
