How much does a veterinary doctor earn in Sri Lanka?
A government veterinary surgeon in Sri Lanka is paid on SL 1-2025, from Rs. 82,150 to Rs. 195,970 basic a month once fully paid in 2027, plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance. A new Grade III vet receives about Rs. 99,950 at the full rate. Employed private vets earn an estimated Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 300,000.
Government veterinary surgeon salary scale
Most vets in government work for the Department of Animal Production and Health and the provincial animal health services, in the Sri Lanka Animal Production and Health Service. The Public Service Commission's recruitment notice of 19 September 2025 placed Veterinary Surgeon Grade III on the executive salary code SL 1-2025, the same scale as Sri Lanka Administrative Service officers:
| Point on SL 1-2025 | Basic (Rs.) | Basic + COLA (Rs.) |
|---|---|---|
| Grade III (step 1, entry) | 82,150 | 99,950 |
| After 10 increments | 106,150 | 123,950 |
| After 18 increments | 129,670 | 147,470 |
| Top of scale (step 36) | 195,970 | 213,770 |
These are full-scale figures. Public Administration Circular 10/2025 pays the increase in phases: part from April 2025, more from January 2026, and the full amount from 1 January 2027. In 2026, a vet's payslip shows a basic below the scale step. The post is permanent and pensionable, so no EPF is deducted; officers contribute to the Widows and Orphans Pension Scheme. Gross pay at entry is under the Rs. 150,000 monthly APIT threshold. Senior vets near the top of the scale, where basic plus COLA passes Rs. 150,000, do pay some APIT. The administrative officer salary page shows the same SL 1 scale for comparison.
What do government vets do?
A government Veterinary Surgeon typically works from a government veterinary office serving a local area. The work includes treating farm animals and pets brought to the clinic, vaccination campaigns, artificial insemination programmes, disease surveillance, advice to dairy and poultry farmers, and meat and animal transport inspection. Every candidate must be ready to serve in any part of Sri Lanka, and rural postings are common early in the career.
How much do private vets earn?
Private veterinary work in Sri Lanka falls into companion-animal clinics, mostly in Colombo, Kandy and other cities, and industry jobs with poultry integrators, dairy companies, feed mills and animal health pharmaceutical firms. Ranges below are SalaryLK editorial estimates of gross monthly earnings; there is no official survey:
| Role | Experience | Monthly (Rs.) |
|---|---|---|
| Junior vet, private clinic | 0 - 3 years | 80,000 - 150,000 |
| Industry vet (poultry, dairy, feed, pharma) | 2 - 8 years | 120,000 - 300,000 |
| Senior / lead clinician | 5+ years | 150,000 - 300,000 |
| Clinic owner (net, after costs) | Established | 250,000 - 600,000+ |
Clinic owners' income depends on location, opening hours, surgery and pharmacy sales, and is net of rent, staff and drug costs. Industry vets usually receive EPF, bonuses and vehicles. For the wider sector, see veterinary industry salaries and agriculture industry salaries.
How do you become a veterinary doctor in Sri Lanka?
- Take A/L biological science. Sit the A/L in the biological science stream with Chemistry, Physics and Biology, and qualify through the UGC admission process for Veterinary Science at the University of Peradeniya.
- Complete the BVSc. Finish the five-year, ten-semester BVSc at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, including the final clinical year and farm externships.
- Register with the Veterinary Council. Register with the Veterinary Council of Sri Lanka, which is a legal requirement to practise. Foreign graduates sit the council qualifying examination first.
- Apply for a government post or private job. Apply when the Public Service Commission advertises Veterinary Surgeon Grade III posts, where selection follows the faculty merit list, or join a private clinic, farm or company.
The University of Peradeniya is the only state university offering veterinary science, with around 110 places a year, so competition is close to that for medicine. If you are deciding between the two, compare with how to become a doctor in Sri Lanka.
How are government vets recruited?
The September 2025 notice called for applications for 107 Veterinary Surgeon Grade III posts, closing on 18 October 2025. The main conditions were:
- + A degree in veterinary science from a UGC-recognised university, and registration with the Veterinary Council of Sri Lanka by the closing date.
- + Age between 21 and 35 on the closing date; Sri Lankan citizenship; physical and mental fitness to serve anywhere in the island.
- + Selection strictly by the faculty merit list; 110% of the vacancies are called for interview, which carries no marks.
- + Proficiency in a second official language within the period set by Public Administration Circular 18/2020.
Because selection follows the merit list, final-year performance at Peradeniya directly affects how soon a graduate gets a government post.

How many years is the BVSc degree in Sri Lanka?
The BVSc at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of Peradeniya, now runs over ten semesters, or five calendar years. The final year is devoted to clinical learning, including externships in dairy cattle and poultry and elective rosters such as small animal practice, wildlife or aquaculture.
Which university offers veterinary science in Sri Lanka?
The University of Peradeniya, through its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, is the only state university offering the BVSc. Entry is through the A/L biological science stream and the UGC admission process, and the Z-score cut-off is among the highest of any degree.
Do I need to register with the Veterinary Council to work as a vet?
Yes. Registration with the Veterinary Council of Sri Lanka is a legal requirement to practise, under the Veterinary Surgeons and Practitioners Act. Peradeniya graduates register after qualifying. Graduates from foreign universities sit a qualifying examination for provisional registration. The government recruitment notice also requires council registration by the closing date.
How are government veterinary surgeons recruited?
Recruitment is by merit, not by an exam. The 2025 notice filled 107 posts in order of the merit list published by the Peradeniya veterinary faculty, with UGC-recognised foreign graduates listed after them by registration date. Candidates must be 21 to 35 years old. The interview checks qualifications and fitness and carries no marks.
How much does a private vet clinic owner earn in Sri Lanka?
There is no official data. A busy companion-animal practice in Colombo or Kandy can give its owner several hundred thousand rupees a month after costs, while a new rural practice may earn far less. SalaryLK estimates established clinic owners typically earn Rs. 250,000 to Rs. 600,000 or more, with wide variation.
Is a veterinary surgeon post pensionable?
Yes. The 2025 notice describes the Veterinary Surgeon post as permanent and pensionable, subject to future government policy on pensions, with contributions to the Widows and Orphans Pension Scheme. Government vets do not contribute to EPF, unlike vets employed by private clinics and companies, who have 8% of salary deducted for EPF.
Do government vets get promoted?
Veterinary surgeons in the Sri Lanka Animal Production and Health Service move from Grade III to Grade II and Grade I within the SL 1-2025 scale, earning annual increments of Rs. 2,400, then Rs. 2,940 and Rs. 3,900. Senior officers can move into posts such as Veterinary Research Officer or provincial and departmental management roles.
Do vets earn more than doctors in Sri Lanka?
No, not in government. A government medical officer starts on SL 2-2025 at Rs. 91,750 basic, above the Rs. 82,150 veterinary entry point, and doctors earn significant extra duty pay. In private practice, an established vet clinic owner can earn as much as many doctors, but the market is smaller.
