What affects a web developer salary

  • Type of employer. Software product companies and offshore teams of foreign firms pay the most. Digital and web design agencies building marketing sites usually pay less.
  • Tech stack. React, Next.js, Angular and TypeScript, with Node.js or Laravel on the back end, attract higher offers than theme-based site building.
  • Back-end and database depth. Developers who can design APIs, work with SQL databases and deploy to the cloud move into full stack pay bands.
  • Client-facing English. Many higher-paid roles involve talking directly to clients in the US, UK, Australia or Europe.
  • Portfolio. Live projects, GitHub work and measurable results (speed, conversions, SEO) help especially when you do not have a degree.

Salary by employer type

Digital and web design agencies50,000 - 80,000130,000 - 250,000

Agencies often give juniors faster exposure to many projects, which can make them a good first job even at lower pay. Moving to a product company or an offshore team after two or three years is the most common way web developers in Sri Lanka make a large jump in salary. Government and semi-government web roles exist, usually under IT officer or programmer posts on public service salary scales, but they are few and pay below the private sector ranges here.

How to raise your web developer salary

  • Move from theme-based site building to custom work in a modern framework such as React or Next.js, with TypeScript.
  • Learn enough back end (Node.js, Laravel or similar, plus SQL) to own features end to end.
  • Show measurable results in your portfolio: page speed, accessibility scores, conversions or search traffic.
  • Get experience working directly with overseas clients, which is what most higher-paying employers look for.
  • Compare offers using take-home pay, not gross pay, since APIT starts above LKR 150,000 a month.

Career path

A typical path is Intern, Junior Web Developer, Web Developer, Senior Web Developer and Tech Lead. Many web developers specialise into front end or full stack roles, or move toward UI/UX design. At larger companies the title usually becomes Software Engineer, and pay then follows the software engineer salary bands. Industry-wide figures are in the web development industry salaries guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the salary of a web developer in Sri Lanka?

Web developers in Sri Lanka typically earn LKR 50,000-100,000 a month as juniors, LKR 100,000-220,000 with two to four years of experience, and LKR 220,000-400,000 as senior developers. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates from 2025-2026 job adverts.

What is the starting salary of a web developer in Sri Lanka?

A junior web developer usually starts at about LKR 50,000-100,000 a month. Small agencies and freelance-style studios are at the lower end, while software companies hiring graduates for React, Angular or Node.js roles pay toward the top of the range. Interns are usually paid less than this.

What is the front end developer salary in Sri Lanka?

Front end developers earn roughly LKR 60,000-110,000 as juniors, LKR 140,000-280,000 at mid-level and LKR 320,000-540,000 as seniors at established software companies. Strong React or Angular skills, TypeScript and performance and accessibility experience push pay up. See the frontend developer salary guide for more detail.

How much does a WordPress developer earn in Sri Lanka?

WordPress developers at Sri Lankan agencies typically earn about LKR 50,000-180,000 a month, depending on whether they mainly build sites from themes or write custom themes and plugins in PHP. Developers who handle WooCommerce, custom plugin work and performance tuning for foreign clients earn more, and many experienced WordPress developers also take freelance work.

What is the difference between a web developer and a full stack developer salary?

The title "web developer" covers a wide range, from building brochure sites to complex web apps. Full stack developers who work on both front end and back end at software companies typically earn more: about LKR 70,000-130,000 at entry, LKR 180,000-350,000 at mid-level and LKR 400,000-650,000 as seniors.

Which skills increase web developer salary in Sri Lanka?

JavaScript and TypeScript with a modern framework (React, Next.js, Angular or Vue), a back-end language such as Node.js, PHP with Laravel, or Java, plus SQL, Git, testing and cloud deployment. Good English and experience with foreign clients matter a lot, because many higher-paid roles serve overseas customers.

Can web developers in Sri Lanka earn in US dollars?

Yes. Many developers work for foreign clients through freelance platforms, contracts or local offshore teams. Freelance income varies widely with skills, reviews and client base. See the freelance web developer salary guide for typical ranges.

Do I need a degree to become a web developer in Sri Lanka?

Not always. Agencies and many smaller companies hire on portfolio and practical skills, and plenty of developers start with a diploma or self-study. Larger software companies more often ask for a degree in IT, computer science or software engineering, and degree holders tend to start at higher salaries.

Is income tax deducted from a web developer salary?

Employees contribute 8% of salary to EPF, and APIT applies only to monthly income above LKR 150,000. Most junior and many mid-level web developers therefore pay no APIT, while senior developers do. The take-home table on this page shows estimates.
