How much does an agriculture instructor earn in Sri Lanka?

How we checked this

  • We read Public Administration Circular 10/2025: Schedule I for the Sri Lanka Technological Service, Schedule II for MN 3-2025, Schedule III for the phased amounts.
  • We read the summaries of the Department of Agriculture's August 2026 recruitment notice for the post, grade, scale and entry rules.
  • We checked both in October 2026. Salary figures are official; the rounded gross totals are our arithmetic.

Agriculture instructor salary scale (MN 3-2025)

We traced the scale in two steps. The 2026 recruitment notice appoints Agriculture Instructors to Grade III of the Sri Lanka Technological Service. Schedule I of Circular 10/2025 then places that service's Grades I, II and III on MN 3-2025 and its Special Grade on MN 7-2025. The notice quoted the same MN 3 range, Rs. 52,250 to Rs. 100,040.

MN 3-2025: Rs. 52,250 - 10 x 800 - 11 x 1,190 - 10 x 1,320 - 10 x 1,350 - Rs. 100,040
MN 7-2025 (Special Grade): Rs. 71,240 - 11 x 1,360 - 18 x 1,850 - Rs. 119,500

What is the agriculture instructor salary by grade in 2026?

These are the Schedule III conversion figures for MN 3-2025 Grades III, II and I, plus the MN 7-2025 entry for the Special Grade. All are monthly basic salary in rupees.

Grade pointCode / stepDec 2024Apr 2025Jan 2026Jan 2027

Special Grade, entryMN 7-2025, step 141,58059,22865,23471,240

One detail is easy to miss. The Special Grade scale starts at Rs. 71,240 when fully paid, which is below the Grade I entry of Rs. 74,660. So the value of reaching the Special Grade is mainly its higher ceiling of Rs. 119,500, not a bigger starting figure.

How much does an agriculture instructor take home?

Adding the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance to the 2026 basic gives these rounded gross figures:

Grade point2026 basic + COLA (Rs.)
Grade III, new appointmentabout 67,000
Grade II, entryabout 74,800
Grade I, entryabout 85,900
MN 3 maximumabout 107,300

Agriculture Instructors are pensionable, so no EPF is deducted, and every figure above is below the Rs. 150,000 monthly APIT threshold. Field officers may also receive travel or field allowances under departmental rules. We could not verify current amounts, so they are not included.

What does an agriculture instructor do?

Agriculture Instructors are the extension staff of the Department of Agriculture: the officers who take research and advice from the department to farmers. The work usually covers advising on crop varieties and cultivation, helping with pest and disease problems, running demonstrations and farmer training, supporting seasonal crop programmes, and collecting field data for the department.

It is mostly outdoor work in an assigned area. If you like farming and dealing with people, it is one of the few government jobs where your technical diploma is used every day.

How do you become an agriculture instructor?

The Department of Agriculture recruits through an open competitive exam. Based on the 2026 notice, which offered 257 Agriculture Instructor posts:

  1. Pass the O/L at one sitting. The 2026 notice asked for six O/L subjects at one sitting, with credit passes in Sinhala, Tamil or English, Mathematics, Science and one other subject.
  2. Complete a two-year agriculture diploma. You need a two-year diploma in agriculture from an institution approved by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission.
  3. Apply online when the exam is gazetted. The 2026 Open Competitive Examination for Recruitment to Posts of Agriculture Instructor, Research Assistant and Soil Surveyor was gazetted on 7 August 2026. Applications closed on 4 September 2026, with a Rs. 1,200 fee, for applicants aged 18 to 35.
  4. Sit the two written papers. Paper 1 is an intelligence test (1 hour, 100 marks) and Paper 2 is subject knowledge (2 hours, 100 marks). You need at least 40% in each.
  5. Get appointed to Grade III. Successful candidates are appointed as Agriculture Instructors in Grade III of the Sri Lanka Technological Service on MN 3-2025, starting at Rs. 52,250 when fully paid.

The same exam recruited 70 Research Assistants into the same grade, for candidates with three A/L science or technology subjects. Provincial departments of agriculture also recruit Agriculture Instructors under their own notices, such as the Central Province in 2025, so check your provincial council's notices too. Our government jobs in Sri Lanka guide covers how open exams work in general.

Agriculture instructor vs other government posts

PostCodeFull scale (Rs.)
Grama NiladhariGN 1-202550,630 - 84,960
Agriculture InstructorMN 3-202552,250 - 100,040
Development OfficerMN 4-202553,060 - 94,100
Public Health InspectorMT 5-202553,320 - 101,110
Sri Lanka Agricultural Service (graduate)SL 1-202582,150 - 195,970

The MN 3 scale starts just above the Grama Niladhari salary and just below the graduate Development Officer salary, but its ceiling is higher than both. It sits close to the PHI salary, another diploma-level field job. Graduates in agriculture should compare the Sri Lanka Agricultural Service on SL 1-2025, the same executive scale as the SLAS. For the wider farming sector, see agriculture industry salaries, and for every code, the government salary scale 2026 page.

Our take: good value for a diploma holder

For someone with O/L passes and an agriculture diploma, we think this is one of the better-paid public service entry points. It starts above posts that require A/L passes, it reaches Rs. 100,040 within the same scale, and the 2026 exam alone offered 257 posts.

What we would weigh is the ceiling against the graduate route. If you can go on to an agriculture degree, the Sri Lanka Agricultural Service starts almost Rs. 30,000 higher and goes far beyond MN 3. If you cannot, or would rather start work now, we would apply for the next Agriculture Instructor exam and also watch provincial notices, which add extra chances in the same year.
