What does an assistant accountant do?

An assistant accountant supports the accountant or finance manager with the core accounting cycle. Typical duties include bank and supplier reconciliations, posting journals, accruals and prepayments, fixed asset registers, preparing VAT returns and supporting payroll, EPF and ETF submissions.

At month-end, assistant accountants help close the books and prepare schedules for management accounts. During the year-end audit they pull together supporting documents for the external auditors. This hands-on work is why the role is a common stepping stone to a full accountant salary.

Is an assistant accountant paid more than an accounts assistant?

Yes. Job titles in Sri Lankan finance teams can be confusing, so this table compares the closest roles by pay and work.

Assistant Accountant Salary by Employer Type

Where you work matters as much as your qualification. Typical monthly pay for an assistant accountant with two to four years of experience (SalaryLK editorial estimates):

Manufacturing / apparel70,000 - 110,000

Which qualification gives assistant accountants the best pay?

AAT Sri Lanka is the most common entry qualification and is enough for many assistant accountant jobs. Progress in CA Sri Lanka, CIMA or ACCA lifts pay at each stage, and employers often pay more once you pass the strategic or final levels. CIMA students are especially sought in manufacturing and apparel firms for costing work.

Once fully qualified, pay rises sharply: see the chartered accountant salary and management accountant salary pages, and the how to become an accountant in Sri Lanka guide for exam routes. Trainees in audit firms follow a different path; see audit trainee salary.

What do employers ask for in assistant accountant jobs?

Assistant accountant adverts in Sri Lanka tend to ask for the same core package: AAT membership or part-completion of CA Sri Lanka, CIMA or ACCA, one to three years of experience in a similar role, and hands-on use of an accounting system such as QuickBooks, Sage, SAP or Oracle. Advanced Excel is almost always listed.

Employers also value practical knowledge of VAT returns, APIT and payroll, EPF and ETF submissions, and supporting the year-end audit. Manufacturing firms look for costing and inventory experience, while banks and finance companies want regulatory reporting skills. Strong written English matters for BPO firms handling UK, Australian and US clients, which often pay above the local average. Candidates who can show they closed the monthly books on time, without supervision, usually command the upper end of the range.

How to Earn More as an Assistant Accountant

  • + Finish a professional qualification rather than stopping at AAT.
  • + Learn an ERP system such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Dynamics.
  • + Build strong Excel skills: pivot tables, lookups and simple models.
  • + Get VAT, APIT and payroll experience, which smaller firms value.
  • + Consider BPO and KPO firms serving UK and Australian clients for higher pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the assistant accountant salary in Sri Lanka?

Most assistant accountants in Sri Lanka earn LKR 60,000 to 120,000 a month in 2026. Entry-level assistant accountants with AAT or a few CA, CIMA or ACCA papers start around LKR 60,000-85,000, and experienced, part-qualified seniors at larger companies can earn up to LKR 160,000.

What is the starting salary of an assistant accountant in Sri Lanka?

A new assistant accountant usually starts on LKR 60,000-85,000 a month. Candidates with AAT membership or a business degree plus some professional exam passes start at the higher end, especially at listed companies and banks. Smaller trading firms may start lower, but full-time pay must be at least the national minimum wage.

What qualifications do I need to be an assistant accountant in Sri Lanka?

Employers usually ask for AAT Sri Lanka, part-completion of CA Sri Lanka, CIMA or ACCA, or a degree in accounting or finance. One to three years of experience with a ledger system such as QuickBooks, SAP or Oracle, good Excel skills and knowledge of VAT and payroll are also commonly required.

What is the difference between an assistant accountant and an accounts assistant?

An accounts assistant handles basic bookkeeping such as invoices, receipts and data entry and typically earns LKR 35,000-70,000. An assistant accountant does more technical work such as reconciliations, month-end closing, accruals and tax support, and earns about LKR 60,000-120,000. The assistant accountant is usually the step before a full accountant post.

Is assistant accountant the same as accounts executive?

The duties overlap a lot. Larger Sri Lankan companies often use the title accounts executive for the same reconciliation and reporting work, with a similar pay range of about LKR 70,000-120,000. Read the job description rather than the title to judge the level of a role, and check who you report to and which reports you own.

How much does an assistant accountant take home after EPF and tax?

On a LKR 90,000 gross salary, the employee pays 8% EPF, which is LKR 7,200, and no APIT because income is under the LKR 150,000 monthly tax-free threshold. Take-home pay is about LKR 82,800. The employer pays a further 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top of the salary.

How long does it take to go from assistant accountant to accountant?

Usually three to five years. The main driver is completing a professional qualification such as CA Sri Lanka, CIMA or ACCA. Once fully qualified, assistant accountants are typically promoted or move to accountant roles paying LKR 150,000-250,000 a month. Strong ERP and reporting experience can shorten the wait.

Do assistant accountants get paid more in Colombo?

Yes. Colombo-based listed companies, banks and BPO firms pay more than companies in outstation areas, often LKR 10,000-30,000 more a month for the same role. Outsourced accounting firms handling foreign clients pay some of the best rates, especially for staff with strong English and Excel skills.

Is assistant accountant a good job in Sri Lanka?

Yes, as a stepping stone. It gives practical experience that counts towards CA Sri Lanka and CIMA, and the pay is above many entry-level office jobs. The ceiling rises sharply once you qualify, with finance managers and chief financial officers among the better-paid professionals in the country.
