Audit Trainee Salary at Big 4 vs Mid-tier Firms

Audit firms do not publish trainee pay, so ranges below are SalaryLK editorial estimates of gross monthly pay from trainees' reports and job adverts for 2025-2026. Overtime pay, meal and travel allowances during audit season can add to these figures. Full-time pay must be at least the national minimum wage of LKR 30,000 a month from 1 January 2026.

Big 4 firms usually pay more and offer structured training and larger clients. Mid-tier firms can give broader responsibility earlier, which some trainees prefer. For audit careers after qualifying, see the auditor salary in Sri Lanka guide.

How long is CA Sri Lanka audit training?

CA Sri Lanka's practical training guide requires three years of practical training with a minimum of 220 working days a year. Training is done under a training agreement with a training partner approved by the Institute and supervised by a member. Most students do this as audit trainees in practising firms while they sit their exams.

AAT members or passed finalists who completed two years of practical training with an approved training partner can be exempt from the Executive Level training requirement, subject to conditions. Members of ACCA and CIMA have their own exemption rules. The full exam route is in how to become an accountant in Sri Lanka.

What do audit trainees do?

Trainees test transactions, vouch invoices, confirm bank and debtor balances, count stock, prepare working papers and draft parts of audit reports under an audit senior. Busy season runs roughly from December to March, when most companies with a 31 March or 31 December year-end are audited, and long hours are normal. Peak season is described in our audit season work guide.

What is the AAT qualified jobs salary in Sri Lanka?

AAT Sri Lanka membership needs one year of monitored training of 220 working days, at an institution approved by CA Sri Lanka and supervised by a Chartered Accountant. AAT-qualified staff then usually move into these roles (SalaryLK editorial estimates of gross monthly pay):

Role for AAT membersMonthly (LKR)
Accounts assistant35,000 - 70,000
Audit assistant / audit officer (company)50,000 - 90,000
Assistant accountant60,000 - 120,000

What is the audit officer salary?

"Audit officer" usually means an internal audit officer in a company, bank or finance company. Junior audit officers earn about LKR 50,000-90,000 a month, and experienced, qualified internal auditors earn LKR 100,000-250,000 (SalaryLK editorial estimates). Banks and listed companies pay most. Government audit posts follow public service scales instead. See the internal auditor salary page for more detail.

Do Big 4 firms pay audit trainees more?
