How do you become a CEO in Sri Lanka?

Most CEOs in Sri Lanka get there through 15 to 25 years of work: a degree, a qualification such as CA, CIMA or an MBA, early responsibility for profit and people, then general manager and director roles. The other route is founding your own company. CEOs of established companies earn about LKR 500,000 to 1.5 million a month.

How we checked this

  • We read Section 9 (Corporate Governance) of the Colombo Stock Exchange Listing Rules for what listed companies must do and disclose.
  • Pay figures come from our CEO, startup CEO, general manager and director salary pages.
  • Checked in October 2026. Timelines and pay are SalaryLK editorial estimates; we do not use any individual CEO's story.

The 6 steps to becoming a CEO

There is no exam or licence for the CEO title. What boards look for is a record of running things well. These are the steps we see in the typical route, with the years they usually take.

  1. Earn a degree in a business-relevant field. Boards usually expect a degree; business, management, accounting, engineering and law are common backgrounds. A state or recognised private university degree takes three to four years.
  2. Add a professional qualification or MBA. Qualify as a chartered accountant (CA Sri Lanka), a CIMA or ACCA management accountant, or complete an MBA, usually while working. Finance qualifications are a common route because they prove you can read a balance sheet.
  3. Take responsibility for profit, people or a product early. In your first ten years, move toward roles where results are measurable: sales, operations, a business unit or a product. Boards appoint people who have run something, not only advised on it.
  4. Become a general manager or head of a function. Around years 10 to 15, aim for general manager, head of finance, operations or sales. This is where you learn to run a P&L, manage managers and report to a board.
  5. Join the leadership team and learn governance. As a director or executive committee member, learn how boards work, how risk and remuneration committees operate, and, for listed companies, what the Colombo Stock Exchange listing rules require.
  6. Get appointed CEO, or build your own company. Most CEOs are appointed after 15 to 25 years of experience, either by promotion or from another company. The alternative is founding a business and growing it, which makes you CEO from day one but with uncertain pay.

The order matters less than the evidence. A finance professional might reach the top as a CFO first; an engineer through plant and operations roles; a marketer through business unit leadership. All of them, at some point, had to own a result.

How long does it take to become a CEO in Sri Lanka?

For an appointed CEO, usually 15 to 25 years. This table shows the typical stages on the corporate ladder, with pay from our salary pages. Years are total work experience, not time in the role.

StageYears of experienceLKR / month
Assistant manager3-780,000 - 200,000
General manager10-15200,000 - 450,000
Director12-20300,000 - 700,000+
CEO (private company)15-25500,000 - 1,500,000+
CEO (listed company)20+800,000 - 2,500,000+

The biggest jump is from general manager to the top table. Many capable managers stop at GM level, because there are far fewer director and CEO seats than manager roles. That is why the steps above stress broad, measurable responsibility rather than depth in one function.

Which qualification is best: CA, CIMA or an MBA?

RouteBest forUsual path to the top
CA Sri LankaAudit, finance and banking backgroundsFinance manager, CFO, then CEO
CIMACommercial finance in companiesManagement accountant, finance director, CEO
MBASales, operations, engineering and IT backgroundsBusiness unit head, general manager, CEO

Finance qualifications are a well-trodden route to the top because boards want a CEO who can read accounts and talk to banks and investors. An MBA earns its keep when it fills that gap for someone from a technical or commercial background. Doing two finance qualifications rarely adds as much as gaining management experience instead.

How much does a CEO earn in Sri Lanka?

Our CEO salary in Sri Lanka guide puts base pay at LKR 500,000 to 1.5 million or more a month for established companies, with listed company CEOs at about LKR 800,000 to 2.5 million. Bonuses, vehicles and other benefits are added on top. For the wider executive picture, see our C-level executive salary page.

A note on the data: under CSE Listing Rule 9.12.8(c), listed companies must disclose the aggregate remuneration of their executive and non-executive directors, not each person's pay. Individual CEO salaries are therefore rarely public, and all CEO pay figures, including ours, are estimates.

What do listed companies require of a CEO?

About 286 companies across 19 business sectors were listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange at the end of August 2025. Section 9 of the CSE Listing Rules sets their corporate governance rules, and several affect the CEO directly.

  • Separate chair and CEO: Rule 9.6.1 requires the chairperson to be a non-executive director, and the two roles not to be held by the same person unless a senior independent director is appointed.
  • Remuneration committee: Rule 9.12 requires a committee of at least three directors, at least two of them independent, chaired by an independent director and with no executive directors.
  • Disclosure: aggregate director pay must appear in the annual report.

In practice this means a listed company CEO reports to an independent-minded board and has pay set by a committee. If you aim for that level, learn governance early; board fees and roles are covered in our board director fees guide.

Can you become a CEO by starting your own company?

Yes, and it is the fastest way to the title. But the title and the pay are not the same thing. Our startup CEO salary page estimates LKR 50,000 to 200,000 a month in early-stage companies, rising to LKR 600,000 to 2.5 million only at established startups. Many founders pay themselves little and rely on equity.

The founder route suits people who already know an industry and have a specific problem to solve. Our startup founder salary page shows how thin the early years can be.

Our take: chase responsibility, not titles

The pattern in this data is clear. People reach the CEO seat by taking on measurable responsibility again and again: a team, a budget, a business unit, then a whole company. Qualifications open doors, but boards appoint people who have delivered results.

What we would watch out for: spending a decade collecting certificates in one function. A third qualification rarely beats three years running a profit centre. And be realistic that there are far fewer CEO jobs than capable managers.

What we would do first, early in a career: ask for the role nobody wants that comes with real accountability, such as a turnaround branch, a new product or a regional team. If your goal is pay rather than the title, compare this route with our best jobs in Sri Lanka 2026 ranking, where some specialist careers reach high pay sooner.

Frequently asked questions

How do I become a CEO in Sri Lanka?

Most people become a CEO in Sri Lanka by working up over 15 to 25 years: a degree, a professional qualification such as CA, CIMA or an MBA, early responsibility for profit or people, then general manager and director roles before appointment. The other route is founding a company. There is no licence or exam for the title itself.

What qualifications do you need to become a CEO in Sri Lanka?

There is no legal qualification for a CEO. In practice, boards usually expect a degree plus a professional qualification or postgraduate degree. Chartered accountancy, CIMA and MBAs are the most common in Sri Lanka, and engineering or law degrees are common in technical and regulated industries. Experience of running a business unit matters more than any certificate.

How many years does it take to become a CEO in Sri Lanka?

For an appointed CEO of an established company, usually 15 to 25 years of work experience. Listed company and bank CEOs tend to be at the long end. Founders can hold the CEO title much earlier, but pay and responsibility depend on how far the business has grown, and many startup CEOs pay themselves little in the first years.

Is an MBA necessary to become a CEO in Sri Lanka?

No, but it helps, especially for people from technical or sales backgrounds who need finance and strategy knowledge. Many CEOs instead hold accountancy qualifications such as CA Sri Lanka or CIMA. If you already have one of those, an MBA adds less. Compare costs and formats in our MBA programmes in Sri Lanka guide before committing.

Which is better for becoming a CEO: CA, CIMA or MBA?

Each works. CA and CIMA build strong finance credentials and often lead through finance director or CFO roles to the top job. An MBA suits people already in sales, operations or engineering who need general management skills. The best choice is the one that fills your biggest gap, taken while you keep gaining management experience.

How much does a CEO earn in Sri Lanka?

Our estimate is LKR 500,000 to 1.5 million or more a month in base salary for CEOs of established companies, with listed company CEOs at about LKR 800,000 to 2.5 million and bank and multinational country heads higher. Bonuses and benefits add more. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates, because listed companies disclose only aggregate director pay.

Can I become a CEO without a degree in Sri Lanka?

It is possible, mainly by founding and growing your own business, or in family-owned companies. For appointed roles in large companies, banks and listed entities, a degree and professional qualification are expected in almost all cases. If you do not have a degree, a professional qualification such as CIMA, which has its own entry route, can open the corporate path.

How do you become the CEO of a listed company in Sri Lanka?

Listed company CEOs are appointed by the board, usually after a long record of running a major business unit or function. Under CSE Listing Rule 9.6.1 the chairperson must be a non-executive director and the chair and CEO roles should not be held by the same person unless a senior independent director is appointed. Strong governance knowledge is expected.

How much does a startup CEO earn in Sri Lanka?

Startup CEO pay varies more than any other CEO role. Our startup CEO salary page estimates LKR 50,000 to 200,000 a month in early-stage companies, LKR 200,000 to 600,000 as the business grows, and LKR 600,000 to 2.5 million at established startups. Many founders take a low salary and rely on equity instead.
