What are the best jobs in Sri Lanka in 2026?

On our scoring, the best jobs in Sri Lanka for 2026 are software engineer, cyber security engineer, QA engineer, DevOps engineer and business analyst. Software engineering ranks first: it starts at LKR 60,000 to 120,000 a month, reaches LKR 350,000 to 550,000 within six to eight years, and has the strongest hiring demand of any role we scored.

How we checked this

  • We read the SLASSCOM Employability Skills Survey 2024, the SLBFE annual report for 2024 and the DCS Labour Force Survey for the first quarter of 2026.
  • Pay figures come from our existing salary page for each job, so the numbers here match those pages.
  • The scores for demand and entry route are our editorial judgement, checked in October 2026.
  • Private-sector pay ranges are SalaryLK editorial estimates of gross monthly salary, not survey results.

A note on the search term: if you typed "top jobs" looking for the topjobs.lk job board, that is a separate Sri Lankan job site and we are not connected to it. This page ranks careers. Job boards like topjobs.lk and LinkedIn are where you then look for openings in them.

How we scored each job

"Best" means different things to a school-leaver, a graduate and someone ten years into a career. We used three factors that matter to most people, and gave pay double weight because it is what most readers ask us about first.

FactorWhat we measuredWeight
Pay (1-5)Midpoint of the experienced salary band on our page for the role: under LKR 100,000 = 1, 100,000-199,999 = 2, 200,000-299,999 = 3, 300,000-449,999 = 4, 450,000+ = 5x2
Demand (1-5)Hiring plans in the SLASSCOM 2024 survey, overseas demand in SLBFE data, and how often the role appeared in the adverts we readx1
Entry route (1-5)How many years and how much money it takes before your first salary. 5 = short course or open entry, 1 = six years or more, or very costlyx1

The maximum score is 20. The method is simple on purpose, so you can re-score any job for your own situation. If you already hold a medical faculty place, for example, the entry route score for doctor no longer applies to you.

Why does software engineering come first?

It is the only job that scores at or near the top on all three factors. In the SLASSCOM Employability Skills Survey 2024, 92% of the 37 IT companies that responded employed software engineers and 70% planned to hire more within 18 months. No other role came close. The same survey put software quality assurance second (51% planning to hire) and business analysis third (49%), which is why QA and BA sit in our top five.

Pay also rises faster than in most fields. Our software engineer salary guide puts a fresh graduate at LKR 60,000 to 120,000 and a senior engineer at LKR 350,000 to 550,000. The entry route is open to more people than medicine or law: a state or private IT degree is the usual path, and our how to become a software engineer guide covers the alternatives.

The catch is competition at entry. The same SLASSCOM survey found 95% of companies struggle to find recruits with the right technical skills. A degree alone is not enough; projects and internships are what get you hired.

Which jobs have the best salary in Sri Lanka?

If you only care about top salary jobs, the ranking changes. These roles pay the most per month on our salary pages, but every one of them takes 10 years or more to reach.

RoleLKR / month
Software Architect700,000 - 1,800,000
CEO (private and listed companies)500,000 - 1,500,000+
CFO400,000 - 1,500,000
Senior Machine Learning Engineer600,000 - 1,000,000
Airline Pilot (mid-level)500,000 - 900,000
Technical Lead500,000 - 950,000

For the full top 25, see our highest paying jobs in Sri Lanka list, and for technology roles only, the highest paying IT jobs guide. If you want a realistic first target rather than a ceiling, our jobs with a 1 lakh salary page lists roles that cross LKR 100,000 early.

Is demand really strongest in IT?

Inside Sri Lanka, for graduate jobs, yes. But demand looks different if you count work abroad. Sri Lankans registered more than 314,000 departures for foreign employment with the SLBFE in 2024, and the CBSL reported that 76.5% of departures in the first nine months of 2025 were classed as skilled. Electricians, nurses, caregivers and drivers are hired in large numbers for the Gulf, Israel and Japan.

That is why electrician and nurse score 5 on demand even though local pay is modest. We cover the evidence role by role in our high demand jobs in Sri Lanka guide.

Why do doctors and engineers rank lower than you might expect?

Because our score penalises long and narrow entry routes. Medicine and engineering need top A/L results and a state university place, and engineering graduates in Sri Lanka also face fairly low starting pay. A mechanical or civil engineer typically starts at LKR 50,000 to 90,000 a month.

These are still good careers, with professional status and strong options overseas. If engineering is your plan, read our mechanical engineering jobs guide for the industries that hire, or computer engineer salary for the engineering path that pays most.

Best jobs if you do not have a degree

  • Electrician and other skilled trades: NVQ training, strong Gulf demand, LKR 40,000 to 85,000 locally.
  • QA engineer: some companies hire testers from diploma or bootcamp backgrounds if they can show testing work.
  • UI/UX designer: a strong portfolio matters more than the certificate.
  • Chef and hotel work: tourism reached a record 2.36 million arrivals in 2025, and chefs start at LKR 50,000 to 100,000.
  • Caregiver abroad: Israel and Japan recruit through SLBFE-approved routes.

School-leavers comparing these should also read jobs after A/L in Sri Lanka.

Our take: pick the job you can enter, then climb

On this data, the smartest move for most graduates is a job with an open door and a steep pay curve: QA, business analysis or software engineering. QA in particular is underrated. It scores 17, starts at LKR 55,000 to 95,000, and many testers move into automation, DevOps or product roles within a few years.

What we would watch out for: chasing the highest salary on a list without checking the route. A pilot licence costs millions of rupees before you earn anything, and executive pay takes two decades. A job scoring 15 that you can start next year usually beats a job scoring 13 that needs six more years of study.

What we would do first: pick two jobs from the top eight, read their salary pages, and look at ten real adverts for each on a job board. The skills that appear in every advert are your study plan.

Frequently asked questions

What are the top jobs in 2026 in Sri Lanka?

On our scoring, the top jobs in Sri Lanka for 2026 are software engineer, cyber security engineer, QA engineer, DevOps engineer and business analyst, followed by data scientist, UI/UX designer and data analyst. They rank highest because pay grows quickly, companies keep hiring for them and the entry route is realistic. Software engineering is first on all three factors combined.

Which is the best salary job in Sri Lanka?

If you rank by pay alone, senior technology and executive roles lead. Software architects earn about LKR 700,000 to 1.8 million a month, CEOs LKR 500,000 to 1.5 million or more, and CFOs LKR 400,000 to 1.5 million. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates. All of them need 10 to 20 years of experience, so they are destinations rather than starting jobs.

What are the top salary jobs in Sri Lanka for freshers?

Among jobs a graduate can start in, data scientist (LKR 100,000 to 200,000), chartered accountant once qualified (LKR 120,000 to 200,000), DevOps engineer (LKR 80,000 to 140,000), business analyst (LKR 80,000 to 150,000) and software engineer (LKR 60,000 to 120,000) pay the most. Airline pilots start higher, at LKR 300,000 to 500,000, but only after expensive flight training.

Is topjobs the same as this list of top jobs?

No. topjobs.lk is a Sri Lankan job advertising website, and SalaryLK is not connected to it. This page is our own ranking of careers by pay, demand and entry route. You can use job boards such as topjobs.lk and LinkedIn, plus company career pages, to find openings in the jobs we rank here.

Which job is best in Sri Lanka without a degree?

Skilled trades such as electrician score well on demand and access, because the Gulf and local construction both hire them, though local pay is modest at LKR 40,000 to 85,000. QA engineering and UI/UX design are possible without a degree if you can show strong practical work. Nursing diplomas and hospitality courses are other routes that lead to work abroad.

Why is doctor not the number one job on this list?

Our score rewards an accessible entry route as well as pay. Medicine needs top A/L results, five years of study, an internship and then years as a medical officer before consultant pay. Government doctors earn about LKR 80,000 to 500,000 a month by grade. If you already have a medical faculty place, it remains an excellent and secure career.

Which IT job is best in Sri Lanka in 2026?

Software engineering is the best all-round IT job on our scoring: 92% of companies in the SLASSCOM 2024 Employability Skills Survey employ software engineers and 70% planned to hire more. QA engineering is the easiest door into IT, while DevOps, cloud and cyber security pay more but usually need experience first. Our highest paying IT jobs guide covers senior roles.

Are government jobs among the best jobs in Sri Lanka?

For security, yes. Government jobs offer a pension, fixed scales and steady increments, but starting pay is usually lower than in private IT or finance. From 2025 the public sector pay revision raised basic salaries in stages, and every officer also receives the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance. Compare scales in our government jobs and highest paying government jobs guides.

How did SalaryLK rank the best jobs?

We scored each job out of 5 on pay, demand and entry route, then doubled the pay score, giving a total out of 20. Pay uses the experienced salary band from our own salary page for each role. Demand uses the SLASSCOM 2024 survey, SLBFE departure figures and the adverts we read. Entry route reflects the years and cost before your first salary.
