Diplomat salary in Sri Lanka

The SLFS uses the SL 1-2025 scale set by Public Administration Circular 10/2025. The increase over the old scale is released in stages: part from April 2025, more from January 2026, and the full revised salary from January 2027. Where an officer sits on the scale depends on grade and years of service; the bands below are SalaryLK estimates of basic pay, before overseas allowances.

How to prepare

  • Read international news daily and follow Sri Lanka's foreign policy statements.
  • Practise timed essays and precis writing; these papers separate candidates.
  • Work through past papers and build notes on regional organisations, the UN system and trade blocs.
  • Study international relations formally if you can: the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) runs courses in the subject, separate from the official training at BIDTI.

Other routes into international work include jobs at foreign embassies in Colombo and the wider government officer exams.
