How much does a pharmacy assistant earn in Sri Lanka?

A full-time pharmacy assistant in a private pharmacy earns about LKR 30,000 to 65,000 a month in 2026. New assistants start at or just above the LKR 30,000 legal minimum wage, and experienced or NVQ-qualified assistants at chains and hospital pharmacies earn the most. A government dispenser on MT 4-2025 earns about Rs. 67,200 in 2026.

How we checked this

  • We read Public Administration Circular 10/2025 for the dispenser and pharmacist scales, and the Ministry of Health's 2026 allied health course call.
  • We read press reports on the NMRA dispensing rules and a TVEC-registered NVQ pharmacy course listing.
  • We checked these in October 2026. Government figures are official; private pharmacy pay ranges are SalaryLK editorial estimates.

Pharmacy assistant salary by experience

Pharmacy assistants are paid by the pharmacy that employs them, so there is no official scale. These are our editorial estimates for full-time monthly gross pay in 2026:

LevelMonthly (LKR)
New pharmacy assistant (0-1 year)30,000 - 40,000
Pharmacy assistant (1-3 years)35,000 - 50,000
Senior or NVQ-qualified assistant (3+ years)45,000 - 65,000

The floor is set by law. From 1 January 2026 the national minimum wage is LKR 30,000 a month for full-time work, so no full-time pharmacy assistant should be offered less. Our minimum salary in Sri Lanka page explains the rule. The ceiling depends on the employer: busy chains and private hospital pharmacies pay more than small neighbourhood shops, and evening or weekend shifts often add overtime.

Can a pharmacy assistant dispense medicines?

This is the question that shapes the job. As The Morning reported in December 2024, the NMRA rule is that "the dispensing of medicines, medical devices, or borderline products shall be carried out by a pharmacist or a registered apprentice pharmacist under the direct supervision of a pharmacist." Earlier coverage in the Sunday Times described the NMRA requirement for a registered superintending pharmacist to be present when drugs are dispensed.

In practice that means a pharmacy assistant works under the pharmacist. Typical tasks are receiving and checking stock, storing medicines correctly, billing, keeping records, handling non-prescription items and helping customers. The rules we read do not give assistants a dispensing role of their own. If you want to dispense, the routes are to become a pharmacist, a registered apprentice pharmacist or a government dispenser.

What qualifications do you need to be a pharmacy assistant?

Many private pharmacies hire school leavers and train them on the job. A recognised course still helps you get hired and paid more. One example is the NVQ Level 4 Pharmacy Technician course, registered with the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission. One provider runs it as 12 months of theory and practical work plus 6 months of on-the-job training. Entry needs O/L or NVQ Level 3 and applicants aged 18 to 45.

Diplomas and certificates in pharmacy practice are also offered by private institutes. Check that a course is TVEC registered before paying. Our list of pharmacy courses in Sri Lanka compares the options.

What does a government dispenser earn?

The closest government job is the dispenser. Schedule I of Circular 10/2025 lists Dispensers with EEG and ECG Recordists and Public Health Laboratory Technicians under Para Medical Services, on MT 4-2025 for Grades III to I and the Supra Grade, and MT 8-2025 for the Special Grade.

PostCodeFull scale (Rs.)2026 entry basic (Rs.)
Dispenser, Grades III to IMT 4-202552,520 - 100,31049,430
Government pharmacist, Grades III to IMT 6-202554,120 - 101,91050,781

Add the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance and a new dispenser receives about Rs. 67,200 a month in 2026, with no EPF deduction because the post is pensionable. The 2026 Ministry of Health call included a one-year dispenser course for applicants aged 18 to 30 with A/L passes in Biology, Physics or Combined Mathematics and a credit pass in Chemistry. Both men and women could apply. The government pharmacist scale and career are covered on our pharmacist salary page.

Pharmacy assistant vs pharmacist: how big is the pay gap?

The gap is mostly about registration. A pharmacist registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council can supervise dispensing and run a pharmacy legally, which is why pharmacies compete for them. Our guide on how to become a pharmacist in Sri Lanka sets out the degree and registration route. For industry-wide pay, including manufacturing and medical sales, see pharmaceutical industry salaries.

A related allied health post with a similar entry route is the health entomology officer, trained through the same Ministry of Health course call.

Our take: a good first job, but plan your next step

On our numbers, a pharmacy assistant job pays close to the minimum wage at first and tops out around LKR 65,000 even with experience. That is a fair starting job for a school leaver interested in health care. But the legal rules on dispensing cap how far the role itself can grow.

If you are under 30 with the right A/L subjects, we would apply for the government dispenser course: it takes one year and leads to a pensionable post that starts above most private assistant pay. If you are set on community pharmacy, use the assistant years to save and study toward a pharmacist qualification. Check your payslip deductions with our EPF and ETF calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pharmacy assistant salary in Sri Lanka?

Based on our estimates, a full-time pharmacy assistant in a private pharmacy earns about LKR 30,000 to 65,000 a month in 2026. New assistants start near the LKR 30,000 legal minimum wage, while experienced or NVQ-qualified assistants at chains and hospital pharmacies earn more. EPF of 8% is deducted from gross pay.

What is the minimum salary for a pharmacy assistant?

A full-time pharmacy assistant must be paid at least the national minimum wage, which is LKR 30,000 a month from 1 January 2026. Any offer below that for full-time work in a private pharmacy is below the legal floor. Overtime and holiday work are paid on top under labour law.

Can a pharmacy assistant dispense medicines in Sri Lanka?

Not on their own. Under the NMRA rules as reported in 2024, dispensing must be done by a pharmacist, or by a registered apprentice pharmacist under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Pharmacy assistants support that work with stock, billing and customer service, under the pharmacist's supervision.

What qualification do I need to be a pharmacy assistant?

There is no single legal qualification for the assistant role, and many pharmacies train new staff on the job. A recognised course helps, such as a TVEC-registered NVQ Level 4 Pharmacy Technician course, which one provider runs as 12 months of training plus 6 months on the job, with O/L or NVQ Level 3 entry.

What is the government dispenser salary?

Government dispensers are listed in Public Administration Circular 10/2025 under Para Medical Services with ECG and EEG recordists, on MT 4-2025. The scale runs from Rs. 52,520 to Rs. 100,310 basic when fully paid in 2027. In 2026 a new dispenser is paid Rs. 49,430 basic, about Rs. 67,200 with the cost of living allowance.

How do I become a government dispenser?

The Ministry of Health trains dispensers through its allied health courses. In the 2026 call the dispenser course lasted one year and asked for A/L passes in Biology, Physics or Combined Mathematics with a credit pass in Chemistry. Applicants had to be 18 to 30, and both men and women could apply.

Is a pharmacy assistant the same as a pharmacist?

No. A pharmacist holds a recognised pharmacy qualification and is registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council, and only a pharmacist may supervise dispensing. A pharmacy assistant is a support role without that registration. Government pharmacists are on MT 6-2025, from Rs. 54,120 to Rs. 101,910 basic when fully paid.

Do pharmacy assistants get EPF and ETF?

Yes, if employed by a private pharmacy. The employee contributes 8% of gross pay to EPF and the employer adds 12% EPF and 3% ETF. On a LKR 40,000 salary, that is LKR 3,200 deducted from your pay and LKR 6,000 paid by the employer on top.

How can a pharmacy assistant earn more?

The clearest step up is to qualify as a pharmacist, which moves you into the supervising role and a higher salary band. Without that, moving to a pharmacy chain or private hospital pharmacy, completing an NVQ qualification and taking on stock or shift supervision usually lifts pay. Another route is the government dispenser course, which leads to a pensionable post.
