How much does a health entomology officer earn in Sri Lanka?

A health entomology officer in Sri Lanka is paid on the MT 6-2025 scale: Rs. 54,120 to Rs. 101,910 basic a month once fully paid in January 2027. In 2026 a new Grade III officer receives Rs. 50,781 basic plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance, about Rs. 68,600 a month. Trainees receive Rs. 41,209 a month.

How we checked this

  • We read Public Administration Circular 10/2025: Schedule I for the para medical service codes, Schedule III for phased amounts and Schedule VI for trainee allowances.
  • We read the Ministry of Health's August 2026 call for allied health training courses, which includes the Health Entomology Officer course.
  • We checked these in October 2026. Scale figures are official; rounded gross totals are our arithmetic.

Health entomology officer salary scale (MT 6-2025)

In Circular 10/2025 the post appears as "Entomological Assistant" in the English column, while the Sinhala column uses the health entomology officer title. Schedule I groups it under Para Medical Services with Ophthalmic Assistants, Dental Technicians and School Dental Technicians. That group is on MT 6-2025 for the Supra Grade and Grades I, II and III, and on MT 8-2025 for the Special Grade.

MT 6-2025: Rs. 54,120 - 10 x 800 - 11 x 1,190 - 10 x 1,320 - 10 x 1,350 - Rs. 101,910
MT 8-2025 (Special Grade): Rs. 86,800 - 10 x 2,420 - 8 x 2,940 - Rs. 134,520

Schedule II labels MT 6-2025 as the scale for "Professions Supplementary to Medicine / Para Medical Services Segment 1". In plain terms, entomology officers share the scale used for government pharmacists and medical laboratory technologists. All other public service codes are on our government salary scale 2026 page.

What is the entomology officer salary by grade in 2026?

The 2025 pay increase is paid in stages, so 2026 payslips are below the full scale. These rows come from the Schedule III conversion tables. All figures are monthly basic salary in rupees:

Grade pointCode / stepDec 2024Apr 2025Jan 2026Jan 2027

Each officer earns one increment a year, so serving officers are usually several steps above the entry point. Circular 10/2025 places the Supra Grade on MT 6-2025 but does not print a separate conversion table for it.

How much does an entomology officer take home?

Adding the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance to the 2026 basic gives these approximate gross figures:

Stage2026 monthly (Rs.)
Trainee (Schedule VI allowance)41,209
Grade III, new appointmentabout 68,600
Grade II, entryabout 76,300
Grade I, entryabout 87,500
Special Grade, entryabout 96,200

Entomology officers are pensionable public servants, so EPF is not deducted, and these amounts are below the Rs. 150,000 monthly APIT threshold. Field travel and duty allowances are paid on top under health service rules. We could not verify current amounts, so they are not included.

What does a health entomology officer do?

Entomology officers are the field scientists of vector control. Their work centres on the insects that spread disease: above all the mosquitoes that carry dengue, malaria and filariasis. Typical duties include adult mosquito and larval surveys, identifying species in the field and the laboratory, mapping breeding sites, checking how well control measures work, and feeding data to medical officers who plan campaigns.

Postings are with national programmes such as the Anti Malaria Campaign, the Anti Filariasis Campaign and the National Dengue Control Unit, and with regional health services. Much of the job happens outdoors and outside office hours, because mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. If the field side of public health appeals to you, compare it with the PHI salary and the health educator salary.

How do you become a health entomology officer?

  1. Pass the A/L in the biology stream. The 2026 call asked for passes in two subjects from Chemistry, Physics and Agriculture, with a credit pass in Biology, together with the required O/L results.
  2. Apply when the Ministry of Health calls for applications. The Health Entomology Officer course is advertised with the Ministry of Health allied health training courses. The 2026 call was open from 7 to 31 August 2026, online, for applicants aged 18 to 30.
  3. Check the eligibility conditions. The 2026 notice accepted male applicants only for this course. Conditions can change between intakes, so read the current notice before applying.
  4. Complete the two-year training. Trainees follow a two-year course. Schedule VI of Circular 10/2025 sets a trainee allowance of Rs. 41,209 a month in 2026 for Entomological Assistant trainees.
  5. Get appointed in Grade III. After passing the course, officers are appointed to Grade III on the MT 6-2025 scale and posted to a national campaign or a regional entomology unit.

The 2026 call covered eight courses in all, including public health inspector, dental technician, dispenser and ECG recordist. If you are deciding between them, our healthcare industry salaries page shows where each sits, and our guide to government jobs in Sri Lanka explains where these calls are published.

Entomology officer salary vs other allied health posts

PostCode (Grades III to I)Full entry basic (Rs.)
Dispenser, ECG and EEG recordistMT 4-202552,520
Public health inspector, public health midwifeMT 5-202553,320
Health entomology officerMT 6-202554,120
Nursing officerMT 7-202554,920

The gaps between these scales are small, only Rs. 800 per code at entry, so the choice between courses should come down to the work rather than pay. For the next scale up, see the nursing officer salary, and for the pharmacy side of allied health, the pharmacy assistant salary page.

Our take: a niche post with steady pay

On the numbers, the entomology officer post is solid but not exceptional. It pays a little more than the PHI scale, the trainee allowance covers you for two years, and the job is permanent and pensionable. Vector control is also not going away, because dengue remains a major public health problem every monsoon.

What we would weigh most is the work itself. This is field science, often early in the morning or late in the evening, in rural and urban areas alike. If you enjoyed A/L Biology and like being outdoors, we think it suits you well. If you want patient contact, the nursing or PHI routes are a better fit.

Circular 10/2025 does not list those amounts and we could not verify current figures, so we have not included them in the pay tables.

Can women apply for the health entomology officer course?
