Which companies run management trainee programmes in Sri Lanka?

Structured MT programmes are run mainly by large diversified groups. Two well-known examples:

  • - John Keells Holdings runs the JKH Management Trainee programme (JKHMT), with an annual intake advertised on its careers site.
  • - Hayleys runs a Management Trainee Programme with cross-sector rotation, C-suite mentoring and sector projects. Hayleys says its 2025/2026 intake drew more than 5,500 applications.

Banks, apparel manufacturers, FMCG companies, telecom operators and plantation companies also hire graduate trainees, executive trainees or management trainees under different names. Intakes are small and competitive, so apply to several. Pay for related entry routes is covered in fresh graduate salary in Sri Lanka and trainee salary expectations.

What does a management trainee do?

A management trainee spends a year or two rotating through functions such as sales, marketing, operations, finance, HR and supply chain. Trainees work on real projects, often presenting results to senior managers, and are assessed throughout the programme.

The aim is to build general managers who understand the whole business. By the end, most trainees are placed in one function based on performance and interest. Those who join marketing can compare pay with the marketing executive salary, and those placed in people roles with the HR executive salary.

How fast does pay grow after a management trainee programme?

Pay rises quickly for trainees who are confirmed. This table shows a typical path at a large Sri Lankan company (SalaryLK editorial estimates of gross monthly pay).

RoleYears from graduationMonthly (LKR)
Management Trainee0-2 years60,000 - 150,000
Executive1-3 years100,000 - 180,000

Assistant Manager4-7 years200,000 - 320,000
Manager6-10 years300,000 - 500,000

Faster promotion is the main reward of an MT programme. Many former trainees move into business development, brand management or operations management, and the strongest reach general manager roles. For the broader picture, see internship to full-time salary and management courses in Sri Lanka.

Management Trainee vs Intern vs Graduate Executive

These entry routes are often confused. An intern is usually still studying, works for a few months and receives an allowance rather than a full salary; see internship salaries in Sri Lanka. A graduate executive is hired straight into one department, such as sales or finance, on an executive salary from day one.

A management trainee is a full-time employee on a structured programme, moving between departments before settling into one. Starting pay at large groups is often similar to or slightly above a graduate executive's, but the bigger difference is visibility: trainees meet senior leaders early, get regular feedback and are tracked for promotion. At smaller companies the title "management trainee" is sometimes used for an ordinary junior post without rotations, so ask about the training plan, the length of the programme and the role you will move into before you accept.

Who can apply for a management trainee programme?

  • + A recent degree, usually with a good GPA or class.
  • + Strong English communication, written and spoken.
  • + Leadership evidence from clubs, sports, societies or projects.
  • + Internship experience and interest in the company's industries.
  • + Readiness for aptitude tests, assessment centres and panel interviews.

Accounting graduates who prefer a technical path often join audit firms instead; compare the audit trainee salary and assistant accountant salary.

Smaller companies pay about LKR 60,000-85,000, while large conglomerates and multinationals with structured programmes pay about LKR 90,000-150,000. Which companies run management trainee programmes in Sri Lanka?

Large groups run formal programmes with competitive annual intakes. John Keells Holdings runs the JKH Management Trainee programme and Hayleys runs a Management Trainee Programme that it says drew over 5,500 applications for its 2025/2026 intake. Many banks, apparel, FMCG and telecom companies also recruit graduate or management trainees.

Who can apply for a management trainee job in Sri Lanka?

Most programmes want recent graduates with a good degree in business, management, engineering, science or IT, strong English and leadership experience from university activities. Some accept final-year students or holders of professional qualifications such as CIMA or CA. Selection usually includes aptitude tests, assessment centres and panel interviews.

How long is a management trainee programme?

Most Sri Lankan management trainee programmes last about one to two years. Trainees rotate through several departments or business units, work on projects and receive mentoring from senior managers. At the end, trainees who perform well are confirmed as executives or assistant managers in one business.

What happens after a management trainee programme?

Successful trainees are usually appointed as an executive or senior executive, with a pay rise to about LKR 100,000-180,000 a month. Strong performers at large groups can reach assistant manager within four to seven years. Some trainees leave for MBAs or roles abroad, using the programme as a strong start to their CV.

Is a management trainee paid more than a graduate executive?

At top groups, often slightly more, because structured programmes compete for the best graduates. At ordinary companies the pay is similar. The main difference is the training: trainees get rotations, mentoring and faster exposure to senior managers, which tends to speed up promotion.

Do management trainees get EPF and ETF?

Yes, if they are employees. Management trainees on a contract of employment are entitled to EPF and ETF, with the employee paying 8% and the employer 12% EPF plus 3% ETF. Most trainee salaries are below the LKR 150,000 monthly APIT threshold, so little or no income tax is deducted.

How can I get selected for a management trainee programme?

Prepare early. Keep a good GPA, take on leadership roles in university clubs or projects, and build internship experience. Practise aptitude and case interview questions, and show clear interest in the company's businesses. Applications usually open once a year, so watch company career pages and LinkedIn.

Is management trainee a good first job in Sri Lanka?

Yes, especially at a large group. It offers broad exposure, strong networks and faster progression than many entry-level roles. The pay at the start is not always higher than a specialist job such as software engineering, but the leadership path can lead to well-paid management posts.
