Updated • 9 FAQs

What jobs can you get after A/L, and what do they pay?

Most private jobs open to A/L holders in Sri Lanka pay LKR 30,000 to 70,000 a month to start, by our estimate. State posts pay more: a BOC trainee staff assistant gets Rs. 55,000 in year one, a new Station Master about Rs. 71,700, and a new Police Sub Inspector about Rs. 120,700 with allowances.

How we checked this

  • We read the 2025 BOC, People's Bank and Central Bank trainee notices and the April 2026 Police SI gazette.
  • Government pay comes from Public Administration Circular 10/2025 and Circular 10/2025 (I); the minimum wage from Act No. 11 of 2025.
  • Checked in October 2026. State figures are official; every private-sector range is a SalaryLK editorial estimate.

These are the A/L-entry posts with published pay. They recruit through open exams, usually once a year or less, so you need to watch the Gazette and the banks' websites.

Private jobs for A/L students: what they pay

Private employers hire all year and decide faster. The trade-off is lower starting pay. Our estimates of gross monthly salary for a full-time new starter:

JobStarting pay (LKR, estimate)
BPO / call centre associate35,000 - 70,000
Private bank trainee banking assistant45,000 - 65,000
Hotel front office / receptionist35,000 - 55,000
Audit or accounts trainee (AAT / CA student)30,000 - 70,000
IT trainee / junior support30,000 - 50,000
Retail cashier / sales assistant30,000 - 45,000
Nursing assistant / caregiver35,000 - 55,000

BPO work pays best at entry here because of shift and language premiums; our BPO jobs salary guide covers night-shift pay. Whatever the job, a full-time employer cannot pay you less than LKR 30,000 a month from 1 January 2026; our minimum salary in Sri Lanka page explains the rule.

Which training paths raise your pay the most?

A/L opens the door; a qualification decides how far you go. These are the routes we see lift pay most clearly, and several let you earn while you study.

PathTimeWhere it leads
AAT (accounting technician)2-3 years part timeAccounts assistant, audit trainee, then CA, CIMA or ACCA
IBSL banking diploma (DBF)While workingPromotion in banks; listed by People’s Bank as a recognised qualification
Government school of nursing3 years, paid allowanceGrade III nursing officer, MT 7-2025
National College of Education3 yearsTeacher Grade 3-I(b), Rs. 61,620 basic at full scale
IT degree, HND or bootcamp1-4 yearsSoftware engineer from LKR 60,000-120,000
NVQ / NAITA trade course6 months - 2 yearsElectrician, technician, hospitality and care jobs

The nursing route stands out because the state pays you while you train: Rs. 43,274 a month in the first year in 2026. Accounting is the most flexible: an audit trainee job plus AAT, then a professional qualification, is a well-worn route in Sri Lanka; see audit trainee salary.

Can A/L students earn while waiting for results?

Yes, and the months between the exam and results or university entry are a good time to try. Tutoring younger students, online freelancing and short retail or event contracts are the common options. Rates vary a lot, and some "online jobs" ask you to pay a fee first, which is a warning sign. Our part-time online jobs for students guide lists realistic rates.

How do you get from an A/L job to LKR 100,000 a month?

Few A/L-entry jobs start at LKR 100,000; Police SI is the main exception. For most people it takes a few years plus a qualification: a confirmed bank post with an IBSL diploma, a BPO team lead role, or a software job after an IT qualification. Our jobs with a 1 lakh salary page shows how long each route usually takes.

Our take: what we would do after A/L

Apply for every state exam you qualify for in the first year after A/L. The bank trainee posts and Police SI pay more than almost any private job open to you, and age limits close the door quickly: BOC set 24, People's Bank 23, the Central Bank 22.

While you wait, take a private job that comes with a qualification, not just a salary. An audit trainee post with AAT, or a nursing assistant job while you apply for a nursing course, is worth more over three years than a slightly better-paid dead end.

And if you have a university place, take it. The highest starting salaries in both sectors go to graduates, as our highest paying government jobs list shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What jobs can I do after A/L in Sri Lanka?

With A/L results you can apply for state jobs such as Police Sub Inspector, Station Master, Management Service Officer and bank trainee posts at BOC, People’s Bank and the Central Bank. In the private sector, common first jobs are BPO and call centre work, bank trainee, hotel front office, retail, IT support and accounts or audit trainee roles. Most pay LKR 30,000-70,000 to start.

What is the salary of jobs after A/L?

Our estimate for private-sector jobs open to A/L holders is LKR 30,000 to 70,000 a month to start, and no full-time job may pay below the LKR 30,000 national minimum wage from January 2026. State posts pay more: a BOC trainee gets Rs. 55,000 in year one, a new Station Master about Rs. 71,700 and a new Police SI about Rs. 120,700 with allowances.

Which government jobs can I get with A/L?

Posts that recruit A/L holders through open exams include Police Sub Inspector (three A/L passes, age 18-25 in the April 2026 notice), Station Master Grade III, and the Management Service Officer exam, which accepts O/L or listed A/L qualifications. Recruitment is announced in the Government Gazette, so check each notice for age limits and subject requirements.

Can I get a bank job after A/L?

Yes. BOC’s 2025 Trainee Staff Assistant notice asked for six O/L subjects with five credits including mother language, maths and English, plus three A/L passes, and an age of 24 or below. Trainees received Rs. 55,000 a month in year one and Rs. 70,000 in year two. People’s Bank and the Central Bank recruit A/L holders through similar exams.

What are good part-time jobs for A/L students?

While waiting for results or university entry, many students tutor younger children, do online work such as data entry, content writing or graphic design, or take retail and event jobs. Pay is usually by the hour or task. Our part-time online jobs for students guide lists realistic rates and what to avoid.

What is the highest paying job after A/L without a degree?

Among jobs we checked, Police Sub Inspector pays the most at entry: about Rs. 120,700 a month once allowances in the April 2026 recruitment gazette are added to the Rs. 55,410 basic. It has strict physical, age and marital status requirements. In the private sector, experienced BPO and sales staff can reach LKR 100,000, but rarely in the first year.

Should I study or start working after A/L?

If you have a university place or can afford a recognised qualification, studying usually pays off. Graduate and professional routes start higher and rise faster. If you need income now, choose a job with a training path built in, such as bank trainee, audit trainee with AAT, or a paid nursing course, so you are earning and qualifying at the same time.

Do jobs after A/L include EPF?

Private-sector jobs must include EPF and ETF: the employer deducts 8% of salary and pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top. Trainee allowances on fixed-term training contracts may be treated differently, so check the offer. Permanent government posts are pensionable and do not use EPF.

Can I go abroad for work after A/L?

Yes, many school leavers go abroad on skilled or semi-skilled visas, but most good overseas jobs need a recognised skill certificate or language test first. An NVQ qualification in a trade, a caregiving course or a Japanese language pass for the Specified Skilled Worker route makes a big difference to the pay you are offered.
