What are the highest paying IT jobs in Sri Lanka?
The highest paying IT jobs in Sri Lanka are IT director (LKR 800,000-2,000,000 a month) and software architect (LKR 700,000-1,800,000), by our estimates. Senior machine learning engineers earn LKR 600,000-1,200,000 and tech leads LKR 500,000-950,000. Entry-level AI roles start highest, at LKR 150,000-300,000.

Which IT jobs pay the most at entry level?
If you are choosing a direction now, starting pay tells you which skills the market is short of. AI, ML and data roles start well above general development.

Why do architects and IT directors earn so much more?
Both roles carry decisions that are expensive to get wrong. An architect sets how systems are built across several teams; an IT director owns budget, vendors, security and the people who deliver it. Sri Lanka has a small pool of people with that track record, and software exporters compete for them.

Are AI and machine learning jobs the best paid in tech?
Among hands-on engineering roles, yes. Senior ML engineers sit at LKR 600,000-1,200,000 in our data, ahead of senior cloud, DevOps and security engineers. Senior AI engineers start at about LKR 600,000.

Cloud, DevOps and security: the infrastructure premium
Infrastructure roles start a little above general development and reach similar senior bands: cloud engineers at LKR 450,000-800,000, DevOps engineers at LKR 420,000-750,000 and cyber security engineers at LKR 400,000-750,000. Our take: how we would aim for a top IT salary
Start as a software engineer if you need a job soon; it has the most openings and teaches the fundamentals every senior role needs. Then specialise within three years. The pay gap between a generalist and a cloud, data or ML specialist at the same experience level is large in our data.
Watch the tax. At senior IT salaries, APIT climbs to 36% on income above about LKR 358,000 a month, so a large raise adds less to take-home pay than it looks. Check net figures before you negotiate.

Is software engineering still a high paying job in Sri Lanka?
Yes, but the pay comes with seniority. Software engineers start at about LKR 60,000-120,000 a month and senior engineers earn LKR 350,000-650,000 by our estimate. The big jumps come at tech lead and architect level. Specialising in cloud, data or machine learning tends to raise pay faster than staying a generalist.
Do IT professionals in Sri Lanka pay tax?
Yes. APIT is deducted from employment income above LKR 150,000 a month at rising rates, reaching 36% on income above LKR 4.3 million a year, which is about LKR 358,000 a month. Can I earn more working remotely for a foreign company?
Often, yes. Remote roles with foreign employers or contracts paid in US dollars can exceed local pay at the same level, but terms vary widely and many are contracts without EPF. Compare the full package, including tax treatment, leave and job security, not only the monthly figure.
How long does it take to reach a top IT salary in Sri Lanka?
Our pages show about five to six years to reach senior engineer bands of LKR 350,000 or more, eight or more years for tech lead, ten or more for architect and fifteen or more for IT director. Moving between companies and specialising can shorten that, but there is no reliable shortcut past real project experience.
Which IT certifications increase salary in Sri Lanka?
Cloud certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, Kubernetes certifications for DevOps, and security certifications such as CISSP or OSCP for cyber security roles are the ones employers most often ask for. Are these IT salaries for Colombo only?
Most of the highest paying IT roles are with software exporters and large companies in Colombo and its suburbs, so our ranges mainly reflect that market. Hybrid and remote work has widened the hiring area, but senior roles outside the Western Province are still fewer and often pay less.

Senior IT roles: take-home pay after EPF and tax
Monthly figures at the middle of each range above, using the 2025/26 and 2026/27 APIT rates (first LKR 150,000 a month tax-free) and the 8% employee EPF deduction. APIT starts to apply at the senior software engineer level. The employer also pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top, so a LKR 1,400,000 salary costs the employer about LKR 1,610,000 a month.
