Private Hospital Nurse Salary in Sri Lanka 2026
Estimated nurse pay by hospital tier, private-trained vs government-trained nurses, and factory nursing jobs
How much does a private hospital nurse earn in Sri Lanka?
A registered staff nurse in a Sri Lankan private hospital earns about LKR 50,000 to 110,000 a month in 2026, by our estimate. New diploma nurses start near LKR 50,000-80,000 in large Colombo hospitals. Ward sisters and nursing supervisors earn LKR 100,000-180,000. A new government nurse gets about Rs. 69,257 with allowances.
How we checked this
- We read the MT 7-2025 nurse scale and the 2026 phased amounts in Public Administration Circular 10/2025, and pupil nurse allowances in Circular 10/2025 (I).
- We checked Sri Lanka Nursing Council registration guidance and the 2026 national minimum wage.
- All figures checked in October 2026. Private hospital, nursing home and factory pay ranges are SalaryLK editorial estimates; no private hospital publishes a nurse pay scale.
Private nurse salary by hospital tier
Where you work matters more than the hospital's name. We group private employers into four tiers. Figures are gross monthly pay including fixed allowances, before overtime.
| Employer tier (estimate) | New staff nurse | Senior / BSc nurse | Ward sister |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large Colombo private hospital groups | 50,000 - 80,000 | 70,000 - 110,000 | 100,000 - 180,000 |
| Mid-size regional private hospitals | 45,000 - 70,000 | 60,000 - 95,000 | 90,000 - 140,000 |
| Small hospitals, nursing homes, channel centres | 40,000 - 60,000 | 55,000 - 80,000 | 75,000 - 110,000 |
| Factory or estate sick room | 50,000 - 70,000 | 65,000 - 90,000 | n/a |
The large Colombo groups, such as Asiri, Hemas, Nawaloka and Lanka Hospitals, employ the most nurses and hire all year. We name them only as employers: none of them publishes a pay scale, so the top row is our estimate for hospitals of that size, not any one group's pay. The wider staff picture is on our private hospital salaries page.
Do private hospital nurses earn more than government nurses?
Not at the start. Government nurses are on MT 7-2025, which runs from Rs. 54,920 to Rs. 102,710 basic when fully paid in 2027. In 2026 a new Grade III nursing officer receives Rs. 51,457 basic plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance, about Rs. 69,257 a month, before overtime.
A new private diploma nurse at LKR 50,000-80,000 is in the same zone, but without a pension. The private sector catches up for experienced ICU, theatre and supervisory nurses, and for anyone who wants Colombo instead of a government posting. Full government grades are in our nursing officer salary guide.
Private diploma vs government-trained nurses: how pay differs
Your training route decides which jobs you can apply for and where you start. This table sets out the four common routes.
| Training route | Entry | Typical first job | Starting pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government school of nursing (3 years) | Ministry of Health, A/L entry | Grade III nursing officer, MT 7-2025 | Rs. 69,257 (2026, incl. COLA) |
| BSc Nursing, state or private university | University entry | Nursing officer or senior staff nurse | LKR 70,000 - 110,000 (private, est.) |
| Private nursing school diploma | Private institute, fees | Staff nurse, private hospital | LKR 50,000 - 80,000 (est.) |
| Caregiver / NVQ certificate | Vocational centre | Nursing assistant | LKR 35,000 - 55,000 (est.) |
Government student nurses are paid while they train. Under Circular 10/2025 (I), the pupil nurse allowance in 2026 is Rs. 43,274 a month in the first year, Rs. 43,730 in the second and Rs. 44,186 in the third. Private nursing students usually pay fees instead.
To practise as a nurse in Sri Lanka you must be registered with the Sri Lanka Nursing Council, whichever route you took. Before paying for a private diploma, we would confirm with the institute that its graduates qualify for that registration. The step-by-step routes are in how to become a nurse in Sri Lanka.
Private nursing vacancies in Sri Lanka: who hires and for what
Most vacancies are for staff nurses in wards, followed by ICU, theatre, emergency and dialysis units. Specialist units pay a premium over ward work, typically through a unit allowance. Nursing homes and elder care providers hire steadily too, often at the lower tier.
Nursing assistant posts are the entry point for applicants without full registration. By our estimate they pay LKR 35,000-55,000 a month; see the nursing aide salary and caregiver salary pages for that end of the market.
How much does a factory nursing vacancy pay?
Large apparel, food and manufacturing companies, especially in export processing zones, employ registered nurses to run sick rooms, keep health records and support occupational health checks. Our estimate is LKR 50,000-90,000 a month, with EPF, ETF and usually day-shift hours. It is a good fit for an experienced nurse who wants regular hours, though you will see fewer acute cases than in a hospital.
Our take: is a private hospital nursing job worth it?
If you can enter a government school of nursing, we think that is still the stronger start. You are paid while you train, you start on a published scale, and you keep a pension. Many nurses then move to the private sector or abroad with that experience.
A private hospital job makes most sense once you have two or three years of specialist experience. ICU, theatre and emergency nurses have the best bargaining power, and that is where private pay pulls ahead.
At interview, we would ask for basic pay and allowances separately, because EPF is calculated on the figure the hospital treats as salary. Then ask how overtime is paid and how many night shifts a month to expect. Our nurse salary in Sri Lanka overview and the head nurse salary page show where the career leads. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the private hospital nurse salary in Sri Lanka?
Our estimate is LKR 50,000 to 110,000 a month for registered staff nurses in private hospitals in 2026. New diploma nurses in large Colombo hospitals usually start at LKR 50,000-80,000, senior and BSc nurses earn LKR 70,000-110,000, and ward sisters or nursing supervisors LKR 100,000-180,000. Private hospitals do not publish pay scales, so these are SalaryLK editorial estimates.
What is the Hemas hospital nursing salary?
Hemas Hospitals does not publish nurse pay scales, so we cannot give an official figure. Hemas is one of the large private hospital groups, and our estimate for staff nurses at large Colombo groups is LKR 50,000-80,000 a month in the first three years and LKR 70,000-110,000 for senior or BSc nurses. Ask for the full breakdown of basic pay, allowances and overtime at interview.
What is the Asiri hospital nursing salary in Sri Lanka?
Asiri Health does not publish nursing salaries. Asiri is one of the large Colombo private hospital groups, and our estimate for registered nurses at hospitals of that size is LKR 50,000-110,000 a month depending on experience and qualification, with ward sisters at LKR 100,000-180,000. Treat any specific figure you see online as an estimate unless it comes from an offer letter.
How do I find a private nursing vacancy in Sri Lanka?
Private hospitals advertise nursing vacancies on their own careers pages, in weekend newspapers and on job sites, and many run walk-in interviews. Most ask for Sri Lanka Nursing Council registration, a nursing diploma or degree and, for ICU or theatre posts, experience. Nursing assistant posts are open to applicants with a caregiver or NVQ-level certificate.
How much does a factory nurse earn in Sri Lanka?
Our estimate for a registered nurse running a factory or estate sick room is LKR 50,000-90,000 a month. Large apparel and manufacturing companies in export processing zones employ nurses for first aid, health records and occupational health checks. Pay depends on shift cover and the size of the workforce, and the post comes with EPF and ETF.
Do private hospital nurses earn more than government nurses?
At the start, often not. A new Grade III government nursing officer is paid Rs. 51,457 basic in 2026 plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance, about Rs. 69,257 a month, before overtime, and keeps a pension. A new diploma nurse in a private hospital typically earns LKR 50,000-80,000 by our estimate. Experienced private ICU nurses and supervisors can earn more.
Can NVQ or private diploma nurses work in private hospitals?
Yes. Private hospitals employ nurses trained at private nursing schools, including schools run by hospital groups, as long as they meet the hospital’s registration requirement with the Sri Lanka Nursing Council. Applicants with only a caregiver or NVQ certificate are usually hired as nursing assistants, on lower pay of about LKR 35,000-55,000 a month by our estimate.
Do private hospital nurses get EPF and ETF?
Yes. Private hospital nurses are private-sector employees, so the hospital deducts 8% EPF and pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top. Government nurses are pensionable and do not contribute to EPF. Many private hospitals also pay overtime, night shift allowances and an annual bonus, which can add a meaningful amount to monthly earnings.
What is the salary of a ward sister in a private hospital?
Our estimate is LKR 100,000-180,000 a month for a ward sister or nursing supervisor in a large private hospital. Nursing managers who run a whole floor or a department can earn more. These posts usually require a BSc in Nursing or long experience with additional training in management.

Private hospital nurse: take-home pay after EPF and tax
Monthly figures at the middle of each range above, using the 2025/26 and 2026/27 APIT rates (first LKR 150,000 a month tax-free) and the 8% employee EPF deduction. At these salary levels no APIT is due, so take-home pay is gross pay minus EPF. The employer also pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top, so a LKR 140,000 salary costs the employer about LKR 161,000 a month.
| Level | Gross | EPF 8% | APIT | Take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nursing assistant | LKR 45,000 | LKR 3,600 | LKR 0 | LKR 41,400 |
| New staff nurse (0-3 years) | LKR 65,000 | LKR 5,200 | LKR 0 | LKR 59,800 |
| Senior or BSc staff nurse | LKR 90,000 | LKR 7,200 | LKR 0 | LKR 82,800 |
| Ward sister / supervisor | LKR 140,000 | LKR 11,200 | LKR 0 | LKR 128,800 |
