Sri Lanka Railways pay scale, grade by grade, with allowances and the entry exam
How much does a station master earn in Sri Lanka?
The station master salary in Sri Lanka is set by the Railway-2025 scale: Rs. 57,810 to Rs. 93,810 basic a month once the 2025 pay revision is fully paid in January 2027. In 2026 a new Grade III station master is paid Rs. 53,897 basic plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance, about Rs. 71,700 gross before overtime.
Station master salary scale in Sri Lanka (Railway-2025)
Public Administration Circular 10/2025 replaced the 2016 public service salary scales from 1 January 2025. Station masters, railway guards, engine drivers and supervisory managers in Sri Lanka Railways share one salary code, Railway-2025:
The increase is being paid in three stages. The table shows the basic salary actually paid at the first step of each grade in each phase. The full scale applies from 1 January 2027.
| Grade (entry step) | Dec 2024 (old) | Paid from Apr 2025 | Paid from Jan 2026 | Full, Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade III (step 1) | 34,130 | 49,984 | 53,897 | 57,810 |
| Grade II (step 6) | 36,605 | 53,052 | 57,656 | 62,260 |
| Grade I (step 11) | 39,480 | 56,609 | 62,010 | 67,410 |
| Top of scale (step 31) | 54,130 | 74,784 | 84,297 | 93,810 |
Gross monthly pay in 2026
Every public servant also receives the cost of living allowance, which is Rs. 17,800 a month after the 2024 increase and continues under the 2025 circular. Adding it to the 2026 basic gives these approximate gross figures before overtime:
| Grade | 2026 basic + COLA (Rs.) |
|---|---|
| Grade III, new recruit | about 71,700 |
| Grade II, entry | about 75,500 |
| Grade I, entry | about 79,800 |
| Top of scale | about 102,100 |
Station masters are pensionable public servants, so EPF is not deducted. At these levels gross pay is below the Rs. 150,000 a month APIT threshold, so no income tax is deducted unless overtime pushes earnings above it. Overtime is often a large extra for station masters because stations operate early mornings, nights and holidays, but it varies too much by station and roster to give a single figure.
What a station master does
The station master is in charge of a railway station during their shift. The job covers authorising train movements through the station, working with signalling and communicating with neighbouring stations and control, keeping safety procedures, supervising station staff, and overseeing ticketing and station revenue. Smaller stations may have one station master on each shift, while larger junctions have several. The work is shift-based and includes nights, weekends and public holidays, and station masters can be transferred to stations anywhere on the network. That responsibility for safe train working is the main reason the Railway-2025 scale starts higher than general clerical and management assistant scales.
How to become a station master
- Watch the Gazette. Sri Lanka Railways recruits Station Master Grade III through an open competitive examination. The 2025 notice appeared in the Gazette of 13 June 2025 with 106 vacancies.
- Check eligibility. The 2025 notice required G.C.E. O/L and A/L passes, age 18 to 30, and stated physical and eyesight standards.
- Sit the written exam. The examination is conducted by the Department of Examinations, and results are published on the Department's results site.
- Appointment and training. Appointments follow the selection process set out in the gazette notice, and new station masters receive operational training before being posted to a station.

Career path
Station masters move up from Grade III to Grade II and Grade I within the Railway-2025 scale, earning one salary increment a year. Senior station masters can compete for supervisory posts. In 2023, for example, the Public Service Commission recruited District Inspectors (Transportation and Commerce) from station masters and railway guards with five years of service in Grade I or the Special Grade. That post was on the MN-7-2016 scale, now MN 7-2025 (Rs. 71,240 to Rs. 119,500 when fully paid).
Compared with other public service jobs, the station master scale starts above the Management Service Officer salary and the government clerk salary, reflecting the shift work and responsibility for train safety. For a wider view, see government vs private salaries and transport industry salaries.
