How much does a factory nurse earn in Sri Lanka?

A registered nurse in a Sri Lankan factory or garment plant earns about LKR 50,000 to 90,000 a month in 2026, by our estimate. New nurses start near LKR 50,000 to 70,000. Experienced nurses in large apparel plants reach LKR 65,000 to 90,000, and senior nurses covering several sites can earn up to about LKR 130,000.

How we checked this

  • We read the first-aid section (section 50) of the Factories Ordinance in the consolidated text.
  • We checked Sri Lanka Nursing Council registration and the 2026 national minimum wage.
  • All checked in October 2026. Factory nurse pay is a SalaryLK editorial estimate from adverts; no factory publishes a nurse pay scale.

Factory nurse salary by level

Pay depends mostly on the size of the plant, the number of shifts you cover and whether you look after one site or several. Figures are gross monthly pay with fixed allowances, before overtime.

LevelLKR / month (est.)
Sick room assistant / first aider35,000 - 55,000
Factory nurse, new (0-3 years)50,000 - 70,000
Experienced factory nurse65,000 - 90,000
Senior or group health nurse80,000 - 130,000

The middle of that table matches what we publish for factory and estate sick rooms in our private hospital nurse salary guide. For the wider pay picture inside a garment plant, from machine operators to managers, see our apparel industry salaries page.

What does a garment factory nurse do?

A factory nurse is the first point of care for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of workers. On a normal day the work looks like this:

  • First aid: needle and cutter injuries, burns from irons and presses, fainting, and minor illness.
  • Records: sick room visits, injury logs and accident reports that safety teams and buyers audit.
  • Occupational health: supporting pre-employment and periodic medical checks, often with a visiting doctor.
  • First-aid boxes and first aiders: keeping boxes stocked and helping train line first aiders.
  • Referrals: arranging transport to hospital and following up on sick leave.
  • Health promotion: talks on nutrition, maternal health and hygiene, especially in plants with many women workers.

It is steadier than ward nursing, but you work alone or in a very small team, so you need confidence in your own judgement.

What does the law say about first aid in factories?

We read section 50 of the Factories Ordinance, the main law on factory health and safety. It sets out first-aid rules rather than a duty to hire a nurse:

Rule (section 50)What it means in practice
A readily accessible first-aid box or cupboardEvery factory
One extra box for every additional 150 personsCounted by the largest number at work at one time, per shift
Each box in the charge of a responsible personMust be trained in first aid where more than 50 people are employed
Ambulance room optionThe Chief Factory Inspecting Engineer may exempt a factory with an ambulance room that treats all injuries

In practice, large apparel and manufacturing plants meet these duties, and the stricter health and safety standards their foreign buyers audit, by running a staffed sick room. That is where factory nursing jobs come from.

What qualifications do factory nurses need?

For a nurse post, expect to need a nursing diploma or a BSc in Nursing, registration with the Sri Lanka Nursing Council, and usually one to three years of hospital experience. Emergency or accident and emergency (A&E) experience is a real advantage, because you handle injuries without a doctor on site.

Government-trained nurses rarely move to factories early, because state nursing comes with a pension. Most factory nurses we see in adverts trained at private nursing schools or have left hospital work for regular hours. Our guide on how to become a nurse in Sri Lanka covers both training routes.

Sick room assistant posts are open to people with a caregiver or first-aid certificate, at lower pay. Our caregiver jobs page explains the NVQ caregiver certificate that many of these posts ask for.

The government figure is the Grade III starting basic of Rs. 51,457 in 2026 plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance. Our nursing officer salary page has the full MT 7-2025 scale and later grades.

How do you find a garment factory nursing vacancy?

  • Search job sites and LinkedIn for "factory nurse", "sick room nurse" and "occupational health nurse".
  • Check the careers pages of large apparel groups; many advertise nursing posts for several plants at once.
  • Look in weekend newspapers for walk-in interviews in Katunayake, Biyagama, Koggala and regional plants.
  • Ask the HR team directly. Factory HR departments handle these hires, and our HR assistant page explains who you will deal with.

Before you accept, ask how many workers you cover, whether there is a second nurse for other shifts, and whether transport is provided for early or late shifts.

Our take: a good job for the right stage of a nursing career

We think factory nursing suits two groups best: nurses who want regular hours after a few years on hospital wards, and nurses who need to stay close to a home town where a large plant operates. Pay is broadly the same as a private hospital, and the work is calmer.

The risk is skill fade. If you hope to work abroad later, keep your hospital skills current with short courses or part-time ward shifts where allowed, because overseas employers ask for recent clinical experience. And check the shift roster before you sign: a nurse covering three shifts alone is being asked to do two jobs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a factory nurse earn in Sri Lanka?

Our estimate is LKR 50,000 to 90,000 a month for a registered nurse running a factory sick room in 2026. New nurses usually start at LKR 50,000 to 70,000, and experienced nurses in large apparel plants earn LKR 65,000 to 90,000. Senior nurses who cover several plants can earn more. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates, as factories do not publish nurse pay.

Where can I find a factory nursing vacancy in 2026?

Factory nursing vacancies are advertised on job sites, in weekend newspapers, on LinkedIn and on the careers pages of large apparel and manufacturing groups. Many are in export processing zones and industrial areas such as Katunayake, Biyagama and Koggala, and in regional garment plants. Some companies also recruit through walk-in interviews at the factory.

What do garment factory nurses do?

A garment factory nurse runs the sick room: giving first aid for cuts, needle injuries and fainting, managing minor illness, keeping health and injury records, supporting medical checks, and arranging hospital transfers. Many also run health talks, check first-aid boxes, train first aiders and help with occupational health and safety audits required by buyers.

Is a nurse required by law in a Sri Lankan factory?

The Factories Ordinance does not, in the text we read, require every factory to employ a nurse. Section 50 requires first-aid boxes, an extra box for every additional 150 workers, and a person trained in first aid in charge of each box where more than 50 people are employed. Large apparel factories usually employ nurses to meet these duties and buyer standards.

What qualifications do I need for a garment factory nursing job?

Most factory nurse adverts ask for a nursing diploma or BSc in Nursing and registration with the Sri Lanka Nursing Council, plus hospital experience. Some smaller factories hire nursing assistants or first aiders with a caregiver or first-aid certificate for sick room support, on lower pay. Occupational health or safety training helps for senior roles.

Do factory nurses work night shifts?

It depends on the factory. Plants that run two or three production shifts often need nursing cover for each shift, so night duty or rotating shifts are common. Single-shift garment factories usually need the nurse during working hours only. Ask about the shift roster, overtime pay and transport at the interview, as these change your real monthly earnings.

Do factory nurses get EPF and ETF?

Yes. A factory nurse is a private-sector employee, so the employer deducts 8% EPF from the salary and pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top. At LKR 50,000 to 90,000 a month no income tax (APIT) is due. Many factories also provide meals, transport, uniforms and an annual bonus.

Is a factory nurse job better than a hospital nurse job?

Factory nursing usually offers regular hours, fewer night shifts and pay similar to a private hospital staff nurse. The trade-off is narrower clinical work, so your hospital skills can fade. Government nursing officers earn about Rs. 69,257 a month at the start in 2026 and keep a pension, but entry is through the state nursing schools.

Can a male nurse get a garment factory nursing job?

Yes, there is no legal bar. Many garment factory workforces are mostly women, and some employers prefer a female nurse for that reason, which you may see in adverts. Mixed manufacturing plants, such as food, rubber and engineering factories, commonly hire both male and female nurses.

Factory nurse: take-home pay after EPF and tax

Monthly figures at the middle of each range above, using the 2025/26 and 2026/27 APIT rates (first LKR 150,000 a month tax-free) and the 8% employee EPF deduction. At these salary levels no APIT is due, so take-home pay is gross pay minus EPF. The employer also pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top, so a LKR 105,000 salary costs the employer about LKR 120,750 a month.
