Maldives Jobs for Sri Lankans 2026: Salary and Work Visa Guide
What teachers, resort staff, nurses and builders earn in dollars, rufiyaa and rupees, and how the work visa works
How much do Sri Lankans earn in the Maldives?
Most Maldives jobs for Sri Lankans pay USD 400-1,500 a month, about LKR 132,000-497,000 at LKR 331 per dollar (5 October 2026). Resort and construction workers earn USD 350-800 plus housing, while teachers, nurses and accountants earn USD 900-1,600. Your employer arranges the work permit and e-Visa.
How we checked this
- We read Maldives Immigration's work visa page and the MIRA work permit fee notice.
- We checked the 2022 minimum wage order and the resort service charge law in Maldivian sources.
- We did this in October 2026 and converted at the 5 October 2026 USD and MVR mid-rates.
- Pay by job and living costs are our estimates, not official figures.
Maldives Salary by Job for Sri Lankan Workers
Resort and professional contracts in the Maldives are often written in US dollars; local companies and schools may pay in rufiyaa. The ranges below are SalaryLK editorial estimates of basic monthly pay from Maldivian job adverts and recruitment notices, shown in USD, rufiyaa (about MVR 15.4 per dollar) and rupees.
| Job | USD | MVR | Approx. LKR |
|---|---|---|---|

| EngineerProject and resort engineering roles | 1,200 - 2,500 | 18,500 - 38,500 | 397,000 - 828,000 |
Set these against pay at home. A room attendant in Sri Lanka or a hotel receptionist earns a fraction of a Maldivian resort package, and a government teacher in Sri Lanka earns well under the Maldives rate. Nurses can compare with our nurse salary in Sri Lanka page.
How does the resort service charge work?
Maldivian resorts add a 10% service charge to guest bills, and Parliament passed a law requiring it to be distributed to employees. For resort staff, this can be worth as much as the basic salary at busy high-end properties in peak season, and much less at smaller places or in the low season.
Because the amount swings so much, we would judge a resort offer on the basic salary first and treat service charge as a bonus. Ask the recruiter what the resort paid per month over the last year, in writing. Our guide to holiday resort jobs explains how resort pay works in Sri Lanka for comparison.
What does it cost to live in the Maldives?
Resort staff live and eat on the island free of charge, so their living costs are tiny. Construction workers usually get site housing. Teachers, nurses and office staff in Malé often have to rent, and Malé is expensive. These are our monthly estimates in US dollars.
| Monthly cost | USD |
|---|---|
| Shared room in Malé (if not provided) | 150 - 300 |
| Food (if not provided) | 120 - 250 |
| Phone and data | 15 - 30 |
| Ferry and local transport | 10 - 40 |
A resort worker on USD 500 with free board can often send home USD 400 or more, about LKR 132,000, plus service charge. A teacher on USD 1,200 renting a shared room in Malé might save USD 600-800. The Maldives minimum wage does not cover foreign workers; the 2022 order applies only to Maldivians, so your contract is your only protection on pay.
How does the Maldives work visa work?
The Maldives has no government-to-government scheme with Sri Lanka. Many Sri Lankans find jobs through recruitment agents or direct contact with resorts and schools. Whatever the route, the government process is the employer's job.
| Stage | Who and what |
|---|---|
| Expatriate quota | Employer secures a quota slot for the job |
| Work permit (Entry Pass) | Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology; MVR 350 a month, paid by the employer |
| SLBFE registration | You pay Rs. 22,027 (first time) or Rs. 4,599 (renewal) in Sri Lanka |
| Work visa (e-Visa) | Employer applies through the Xpat Online System within 15 days of arrival |
| Renewal | Visa follows the permit; renewed visas last up to one year |
Since 23 November 2025, visa stickers in passports are no longer valid; only e-Visas count. If your employer still talks about a sticker, ask why.
How to Get a Maldives Work Visa from Sri Lanka
1. Find a job through a legal channel
Apply directly to a Maldivian employer or resort, or use an SLBFE-licensed recruitment agency. Check the agency on SLBFE's licensed agency list before paying any fee.
2. Employer secures a quota and work permit
The Maldivian employer must have an expatriate quota and obtain your work permit (Entry Pass) from the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. The monthly work permit fee of MVR 350 is the employer's responsibility.
3. Register with SLBFE before you fly
Pay the SLBFE registration fee of Rs. 22,027 for a first registration. It gives you SLBFE insurance cover and access to the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malé if things go wrong.
4. Travel with a valid Entry Pass
You must hold a valid Entry Pass before arriving. Do not travel on a tourist visa expecting to switch, because working on a tourist visa is illegal.
5. Employer applies for your e-Visa within 15 days
Within fifteen days of arrival the employer applies for your work visa through the Xpat Online System. Since 23 November 2025 only e-Visas are valid; passport stickers are no longer used.
6. Keep the visa and permit renewed
The work visa runs with the work permit, and renewed visas are issued for up to one year. Ask your employer for proof that the permit fee and visa are up to date.
How to avoid fake agents for Maldives jobs
The Maldives is a short flight away, which makes it easy for informal agents to send people over on tourist visas. These checks protect you.
- - Use an agency on SLBFE's list of licensed foreign employment agencies, or deal with the employer directly.
- - Never pay cash to an individual, and get an official receipt for every payment.
- - Do not fly until you have seen your Entry Pass; a tourist visa is not a work visa.
- - Ask for the contract with the basic salary, service charge terms, food and housing in writing.
- - Check doubtful offers with the SLBFE hotline 1989.

Our take: the Maldives rewards skills and good resorts
For Sri Lankans with hotel experience, the Maldives is often the easiest first step abroad: it is close, the work is familiar, board is free, and a good resort's service charge can double your take-home pay.
The weak spots are that the minimum wage does not protect you and that much hiring runs through informal agents. Construction pay is modest once you compare it with Gulf or Korean rates.
What we would do first: apply directly to established resort groups and schools, insist on seeing the Entry Pass before you travel, and register with SLBFE. Teachers and nurses should get their certificates attested early, because that is where delays usually happen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best Maldives jobs for Sri Lankans?
The most common Maldives jobs for Sri Lankans are in resorts (housekeeping, food and beverage, kitchen, maintenance), construction, schools and hospitals. Teachers, nurses, accountants and engineers earn the most, at roughly USD 900-2,500 a month. Resort jobs pay less in basic salary but add a share of the 10% service charge.
What is the salary for Maldives resort jobs?
Our estimate for resort housekeeping and food and beverage staff is USD 400-750 a month in basic pay, about LKR 132,000-248,000, usually with free accommodation and meals on the island. On top, Maldivian law requires the 10% service charge collected from guests to be distributed to employees, which can add a large amount at busy resorts.
How much do Sri Lankan teachers earn in the Maldives?
Our estimate for expatriate school teachers is USD 900-1,500 a month, about MVR 13,900-23,100 or LKR 298,000-497,000, depending on the school, subject and qualifications. Teachers generally need a degree and a teaching qualification. The number of foreign teachers has been falling as more Maldivians qualify, so check vacancies carefully.
How do I get a Maldives work visa from Sri Lanka?
Your Maldivian employer must have an expatriate quota and get your work permit, called an Entry Pass, from the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. You travel with the Entry Pass, and within 15 days of arrival the employer applies for your e-Visa through the Xpat Online System. You also register with SLBFE before leaving Sri Lanka.
Does the Maldives minimum wage apply to Sri Lankans?
No. The Maldives minimum wage order that took effect on 1 January 2022 applies only to Maldivian workers and exempts foreign workers. Your pay is set by your employment contract, so check the basic salary, service charge, food and accommodation terms carefully before you accept an offer.
Who pays the Maldives work permit fee?
The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority says the work permit fee of MVR 350 a month is payable by the employer of the expatriate. The employer also pays for the expatriate quota. If an agent or employer asks you to cover these government fees from your own pocket or salary, ask questions before you agree.
How much is 1 Maldivian rufiyaa in Sri Lankan rupees?
On 5 October 2026 the market mid-rate was about LKR 21.4 per Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR), with about MVR 15.4 to the US dollar. Many resort and professional contracts are written in US dollars, so the rupee value of your salary moves with the USD/LKR rate.
Can I work in the Maldives on a tourist visa?
No. A tourist visa does not allow work. Expatriate workers need a work permit (Entry Pass) before arriving and an e-Visa issued through the Xpat system after arrival. Working without these can lead to fines, detention and deportation, and you would have no SLBFE insurance cover.
Do I need SLBFE registration for a Maldives job?
Yes. Sri Lankans going abroad for work must register with SLBFE before they leave. The first-time registration fee is Rs. 22,027, which is Rs. 18,200 plus VAT and SSCL, and renewal for the same employer costs Rs. 4,599. Registration includes SLBFE insurance cover.
