How much do Sri Lankans earn in Qatar?

Most Sri Lankan workers in Qatar earn QAR 1,000-5,000 a month, about LKR 91,000-454,000 at LKR 90.8 per riyal (5 October 2026). The legal minimum is QAR 1,000 basic plus QAR 300 for food and QAR 500 for housing when the employer does not provide them, so QAR 1,800 (about LKR 163,000) in cash.

How we checked this

  • We read the ILO summary of Qatar's Law No. 17 of 2020 and a 2026 review of Qatar labour law changes.
  • We checked SLBFE's fee page and the ILO note on the Qatar Visa Center in Colombo.
  • We did this in October 2026 and converted riyals at the 5 October 2026 mid-rate.
  • Pay by job and living costs are our estimates, not official figures.

What is the minimum wage in Qatar?

Qatar was the first Gulf country to set a minimum wage that covers every worker regardless of nationality, including domestic workers. Law No. 17 of 2020 took effect in March 2021, and as of October 2026 the amounts have not changed.

ComponentQAR a monthApprox. LKR

Food (if not provided)30027,000
Housing (if not provided)50045,000
Total cash minimum1,800163,000

We read the minimum as a floor, not a target. If an agency offers you exactly QAR 1,000 for skilled work such as driving or cooking, the offer is low by Qatar standards.

What does it cost to live in Qatar on a low salary?

The difference between a good and a bad Qatar job is often not the salary but what comes with it. If you pay for your own room, these are the monthly costs we would budget for a single worker in Doha.

Monthly costQAR
Bed space or shared room600 - 1,200
Food (cooking in shared housing)400 - 700
Transport (metro, bus)100 - 250
Phone and data50 - 150
Total if housing and food are not provided1,150 - 2,300

Qatar does not tax employee salaries, so your only deductions should be ones agreed in the contract, such as an advance. A worker on QAR 2,000 with free housing can often send home QAR 1,000-1,400 (about LKR 91,000-127,000) a month.

What is the legal route to a Qatar job?

Qatar has no government-to-government scheme with Sri Lanka like Korea's EPS. Jobs come through SLBFE-licensed private agencies, the SLBFE job bank or direct offers from employers. Two things make the Qatar route safer than most.

First, the Qatar Visa Center in Colombo, open since October 2018, handles your medical test, biometrics and a digital contract signing before you fly. You see the contract terms in Sri Lanka, which makes contract switching on arrival harder. The ILO says these services are free for workers.

Second, Qatari law does not allow recruitment costs to be passed to the worker, salaries must go through the Wage Protection System, and since 2020 most workers can change employer without a no-objection certificate. In Sri Lanka you still pay the SLBFE registration fee: Rs. 22,027 for a first registration (Rs. 18,200 plus VAT and SSCL) or Rs. 4,599 to renew with the same employer.

How to Get a Qatar Work Visa from Sri Lanka

  1. 1. Find a job through a legal channel

Use an SLBFE-licensed recruitment agency, the SLBFE job bank or a direct offer from a Qatari employer. Check the agency on SLBFE's licensed agency list before you hand over any document or money.

  2. 2. Get a written job offer

Ask for the basic salary, food and housing (or the QAR 300 and QAR 500 allowances), hours, overtime and contract length in writing. The basic salary cannot be below QAR 1,000.

  3. 3. Employer applies for your work visa

The Qatari employer applies for the work visa. Qatari law does not allow recruitment costs to be charged to the worker.

  4. 4. Visit the Qatar Visa Center in Colombo

Complete your medical test and biometrics and sign your employment contract digitally at the Qatar Visa Center. These services are free for workers and paid by the employer.

  5. 5. Register with SLBFE before departure

Pay the SLBFE registration fee of Rs. 22,027 for a first registration. It gives you SLBFE insurance cover and access to the labour section of the Sri Lankan embassy in Doha.

  6. 6. Travel and receive your residence permit

After arrival, the employer completes your Qatar ID (residence permit). Your salary must be paid through the Wage Protection System, and your employer cannot keep your passport.

How to avoid fake agents for Qatar jobs

  • - Check the agency on SLBFE's list of licensed foreign employment agencies before anything else.
  • - Never pay cash to an individual or sub-agent, and get an official receipt for every payment.
  • - Make sure the salary in your QVC contract matches the salary you were promised.
  • - Do not travel on a visit visa to find work; you lose SLBFE insurance and legal protection.
  • - Call the SLBFE hotline 1989 if anything in the offer looks wrong.

Our take: Qatar is fair on rules, average on pay

Of the Gulf countries, Qatar has the clearest worker rules on paper: a minimum wage for everyone, contracts signed in Colombo, and job mobility. That makes it a sensible first overseas job, especially for drivers, technicians and hotel staff.

The pay for unskilled work is still low in rupee terms. QAR 1,000 basic is about LKR 91,000, only around three times the Sri Lankan legal minimum, and much less if you pay your own rent.

What we would do first: get a trade certificate or a Gulf-recognised licence before you apply, because skilled roles pay double the minimum. Then insist on housing and food being written into the contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average Qatar salary for Sri Lankans?

Most Sri Lankan workers in Qatar earn QAR 1,000 to 5,000 a month, about LKR 91,000 to 454,000 at roughly LKR 90.8 per riyal in October 2026. Labourers, cleaners and housemaids start at the QAR 1,000 minimum plus food and housing, drivers and cooks earn QAR 1,800-4,000, and nurses, accountants and engineers earn QAR 4,000-15,000.

What is the minimum wage in Qatar in 2026?

Under Law No. 17 of 2020 the minimum basic wage is QAR 1,000 a month for all workers of all nationalities, including domestic workers. If the employer does not provide food and housing, it must pay at least QAR 300 for food and QAR 500 for housing, so the cash minimum is QAR 1,800. The rate has not changed in 2025 or 2026.

How much is 1 Qatar riyal in Sri Lankan rupees?

On 5 October 2026 the market mid-rate was about LKR 90.8 per Qatari riyal. The riyal is pegged to the US dollar, so its rupee value moves with the USD/LKR rate. Banks and exchange houses pay slightly below mid-rate when you send money home, so check the rate on the day you remit.

What is the Qatar Visa Center in Colombo?

The Qatar Visa Center (QVC) in Colombo opened in October 2018. Workers going to Qatar do their medical test, give biometrics and sign their employment contract digitally there before they travel. According to the ILO, all QVC services are free for migrant workers because employers pay for them. You can track your visa application online.

Do I have to pay for a Qatar work visa?

Qatari law does not allow recruitment costs to be charged to workers, and the Qatar Visa Center services are paid by the employer. In Sri Lanka you pay the SLBFE registration fee of Rs. 22,027 and your own passport and certificate costs. If anyone asks for several lakhs of rupees for a Qatar visa, treat it as a warning sign.

Can I change jobs in Qatar?

Yes. Since 2020 most workers can change employer without a no-objection certificate, after giving notice as set out in the law, and most workers no longer need an exit permit to leave Qatar. Domestic workers have their own rules. Check the latest Ministry of Labour guidance before you resign.

How much can a Sri Lankan save in Qatar?

It depends mostly on whether the employer gives you housing and food. A worker on QAR 2,000 with free accommodation can often save QAR 1,000-1,400 a month. Paying for a bed space, food and transport yourself costs about QAR 1,150-2,300 a month, which can take most of a low salary. These are SalaryLK estimates.

Do Sri Lankans pay income tax in Qatar?

Qatar does not tax salaries of individual employees, so your contract salary is paid in full apart from agreed deductions. Sri Lanka taxes residents on worldwide income, but someone living and working abroad for most of the year is usually treated as non-resident. If you come back to a local job, our tax calculator shows your APIT.

Does SLBFE send workers to Qatar under a government scheme?

There is no special government-to-government scheme for Qatar like the Korea EPS or Israel caregiver programmes. Most Qatar jobs go through SLBFE-licensed private agencies or direct employer offers, and SLBFE also lists vacancies in its job bank. Whatever the route, you must register with SLBFE before you leave.
