Railway Guard Salary in Sri Lanka 2026
Railway-2025 pay by grade, what a guard takes home in 2026 and how the entry exam works
How much does a railway guard earn in Sri Lanka?
A railway guard in Sri Lanka is paid on the Railway-2025 scale, Rs. 57,810 to Rs. 93,810 basic a month once the 2025 revision is fully paid in January 2027. In 2026 a new Grade III guard receives Rs. 53,897 basic plus the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance, about Rs. 71,700 a month before overtime.
How we checked this
- We read Schedule I of PA Circular 10/2025, which places railway guards on Railway-2025, and its conversion tables for the 2025, 2026 and 2027 amounts.
- For the exam, we used published summaries of the Railway Guard Grade III gazette of 14 February 2025.
- We checked in October 2026. Gross figures are our sums of basic plus COLA; overtime is not included.
Which salary scale do railway guards get?
Public Administration Circular 10/2025 replaced the 2016 scales from 1 January 2025. Its Schedule I lists four Sri Lanka Railways posts together: Station Master, Railway Guard, Railway Engine Driver and Supervisory Manager, Grades I, II and III. All four share one code, Railway-2025:
In plain terms: a guard starts at Rs. 57,810 and earns one increment a year, Rs. 890 for the first five years, then Rs. 1,030, then Rs. 1,300 and finally Rs. 1,340, until the top of Rs. 93,810. Grade II starts at step 6 and Grade I at step 11 of the same scale.
Railway guard salary by grade, 2024 to 2027
The 2025 increase is paid in three stages. The table shows the basic salary at the entry step of each grade in each phase, taken from the circular's conversion table.
| Grade (entry step) | Dec 2024 (old) | Paid from Apr 2025 | Paid from Jan 2026 | Full, Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade III (step 1) | 34,130 | 49,984 | 53,897 | 57,810 |
| Grade II (step 6) | 36,605 | 53,052 | 57,656 | 62,260 |
| Grade I (step 11) | 39,480 | 56,609 | 62,010 | 67,410 |
| Top of scale (step 31) | 54,130 | 74,784 | 84,297 | 93,810 |
That is a big change. A new guard's basic went from Rs. 34,130 at the end of 2024 to Rs. 57,810 on the full new scale, an increase of about 69%.
How much does a railway guard take home?
Every public servant also receives the Rs. 17,800 monthly cost of living allowance. Adding it to basic gives these gross figures before overtime:
| Grade | 2026 gross (Rs.) | From Jan 2027 (Rs.) |
|---|---|---|
| Grade III, new guard | about 71,700 | about 75,600 |
| Grade II, entry | about 75,500 | about 80,100 |
| Grade I, entry | about 79,800 | about 85,200 |
| Top of scale | about 102,100 | about 111,600 |
Guards are pensionable, so no EPF is deducted, and at these levels pay is under the Rs. 150,000 APIT threshold. Overtime and holiday pay can add a meaningful amount, because trains run early, late and on public holidays, but it varies too much by line and roster for us to give a figure.
What does a railway guard do?
In broad terms, the guard is the officer responsible for the train alongside the driver. The work generally covers checking the train before departure, giving the right-away signal at stations, watching for safety problems on the run, protecting the train if it stops unexpectedly, keeping the train journal and looking after parcels and passengers' safety. On many trains the guard is the main point of contact for passengers in an emergency. It is shift work across the network, and guards can be based at any depot.
How do you become a railway guard?
- Watch the Gazette. Sri Lanka Railways recruits Railway Guard Grade III through an open competitive examination advertised in the Government Gazette. The last notice appeared on 14 February 2025.
- Check the qualifications. The 2025 notice asked for three A/L passes at one sitting in the Mathematics stream, or an NVQ Level 6 engineering diploma, or an equivalent technical diploma such as NDT, NDES or HNDE.
- Apply online. Applications are made through the Department of Examinations online portal, applications.doenets.lk, before the closing date.
- Sit the written examination. The Department of Examinations conducts the exam and issues admission cards online. Results and qualified lists are published after marking.
- Interview, medical and training. Qualified candidates go through the selection steps in the gazette notice, then operational training before working trains as Grade III guards.
The 2025 notice was officially the "Competitive Examination for Recruitment to Grade III in the Post of Railway Guard - 2024", reported to cover 136 vacancies, with the closing date extended to 21 April 2025. The Mathematics stream and engineering diploma requirement is stricter than many people expect for this post, so check it before you apply. Is a railway guard paid more than other public servants?
At entry, yes. Railway-2025 starts at Rs. 57,810, above the Rs. 48,470 of a Grade III Management Service Officer and the government clerk salary. It is the same scale as the station master salary; the two jobs differ in duties and overtime, not basic pay.
Senior guards can move into supervisory work. In 2023 the Public Service Commission recruited District Inspectors (Transportation and Commerce) from station masters and guards with five years in Grade I or the Special Grade. That post is now on MN 7-2025, Rs. 71,240 to Rs. 119,500 when fully paid.
Our take: a solid scale with a technical entry bar
For an A/L leaver from the Mathematics stream, a guard post pays more at the start than most clerical routes into the public service, comes with a pension, and has overtime on top. That is a good package.
The catch is the lifestyle. Guards work long rosters on moving trains, including nights and holidays, and can be posted to depots far from home. If that sounds hard, the same scale is available to station masters, who work from a fixed station.
We would also look at the full scale, not just the start. With 30 increments to the top, a guard who stays the course reaches Rs. 93,810 basic, about Rs. 111,600 with COLA at 2027 rates. For the bigger picture on transport pay, see transport industry salaries and the government salary scale 2026.
