Computer engineer salary by career path

"Computer engineer" is not one job in Sri Lanka. It is a degree that leads to several careers, and the pay curve depends on which one you pick. Monthly gross pay in LKR:

PathEntry (0-2 yrs)Mid (3-5 yrs)Senior (6-8 yrs)
Software engineering60,000 - 120,000150,000 - 300,000350,000 - 550,000

Cyber security engineering75,000 - 135,000180,000 - 380,000400,000 - 680,000
Network engineering60,000 - 100,000120,000 - 240,000260,000 - 420,000
Embedded systems90,000 - 160,000160,000 - 280,000280,000+

Electronics engineering50,000 - 85,00075,000 - 140,000130,000 - 280,000

Two patterns stand out. Embedded and hardware roles start higher than software, because fewer graduates can do them. But software, DevOps and security overtake them by year five, because those skills are hired in far larger numbers and can be sold to foreign clients.

Computer engineer salary by experience

Taking all paths together, this is the range we would expect a computer engineering graduate to see over the first eight years.

LevelTypical titlesLKR / month
Graduate (0-2 years)Associate or trainee engineer60,000 - 160,000
Mid-level (3-5 years)Engineer, senior network or embedded engineer120,000 - 300,000
Senior (6-8 years)Senior engineer, team lead260,000 - 550,000

Beyond eight years, the ceiling depends on whether you move into leadership. Our technical lead salary and software architect salary pages cover those roles, and the highest paying IT jobs guide ranks them.

Computer engineer: take-home pay after EPF and tax

Monthly figures at the middle of each range above, using the 2025/26 and 2026/27 APIT rates (first LKR 150,000 a month tax-free) and the 8% employee EPF deduction. APIT starts to apply at the mid-level (3-5 years) level. The employer also pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top, so a LKR 405,000 salary costs the employer about LKR 465,750 a month.

Which path pays most for computer engineering graduates?

On our data, DevOps and cyber security engineering have the highest senior pay, at about LKR 400,000 to 680,000 a month. Both usually need two or three years in development, systems or networking first, so they are second jobs rather than first ones.

For a first job, software engineering is the safest bet: it has the most openings, and the SLASSCOM Employability Skills Survey 2024 found 70% of responding IT firms planned to hire software engineers. If you enjoyed digital electronics and microcontrollers, embedded systems pays well from the start and has less competition.

Is computer engineering better than computer science for salary?

For software jobs, no. Employers in Sri Lanka pay software engineers by skill and level, not by degree title. A computer engineering graduate and a computer science graduate in the same associate engineer role earn the same LKR 60,000 to 120,000.

Where the engineering degree helps is in jobs that touch hardware: embedded firmware, chip and board design, network engineering and telecommunications. Those employers often prefer engineering graduates because of the electronics and signals background.

Where do computer engineers study and work in Sri Lanka?

State universities offer computer engineering as an engineering specialisation. The University of Peradeniya has a Department of Computer Engineering, and the University of Moratuwa offers Computer Science and Engineering within its engineering faculty. Several private institutes also offer computer engineering degrees; check IESL accreditation before you enrol. Our engineering faculties in Sri Lanka guide compares the options.

After graduating, most computer engineers join software product and services companies in Colombo. Others go to telecom operators, banks and payment companies (see fintech jobs in Sri Lanka), embedded design firms and universities.

Do computer engineers need ECSL registration?

The Engineering Council, Sri Lanka Act No. 4 of 2017 requires engineering practitioners to register with the Engineering Council Sri Lanka. Graduates of four-year IESL accredited or recognised degrees register as Associate Engineers, and later as Chartered Engineers after the IESL Professional Review. Software employers rarely ask for it, but telecom, infrastructure and design roles can. Our mechanical engineering jobs guide explains the registration categories in full.

Our take: start in software, keep the hardware door open

On pay and demand, the strongest first move for most computer engineering graduates is a software or DevOps-track role. That is where the openings are, and the pay curve is steepest: senior software engineers reach LKR 350,000 to 550,000.

What we would watch out for: dropping the hardware side of your degree entirely. Embedded, IoT and network skills are scarcer than general web development, and that scarcity protects your pay when the software market slows.

What we would do first: use your final-year project to build something that shows both sides, such as firmware plus a cloud dashboard, and put it on GitHub. It answers the interview question every employer asks: what have you actually built? Our best jobs in Sri Lanka 2026 ranking shows how these paths compare with other careers.

Frequently asked questions

Embedded and hardware roles pay less locally but are harder to replace with general software staff.

Is computer engineering a good degree in Sri Lanka?

Yes, if you like both hardware and software. It qualifies you for the highest-demand IT roles and also for embedded and network work that pure software degrees cover less. State university places are competitive. Check that a private degree is IESL accredited or recognised if you want to register with the Engineering Council as an Associate Engineer.

Do computer engineers need ECSL registration?

Engineering practitioners must register with the Engineering Council Sri Lanka under the Engineering Council, Sri Lanka Act No. 4 of 2017. Graduates of four-year IESL accredited or recognised engineering degrees register as Associate Engineers. In practice software employers rarely ask for it, but registration matters for engineering design, telecom and infrastructure roles.

Where do computer engineers work in Sri Lanka?

Most work at software product and services companies in Colombo. Others work at telecom operators, internet service providers, banks and payment companies, electronics and embedded design firms, and in research or university posts. A growing number work remotely for foreign companies. Our fintech jobs guide covers the payment and banking side.

How much does a computer engineer earn abroad compared with Sri Lanka?

Usually several times more. Software and network engineers are among the professionals our UAE guide places at AED 4,000 to 20,000 a month, and remote roles for foreign companies often pay above local senior rates. Two to four years of solid local experience is what most overseas employers expect before they hire.
