Where are the mechanical engineering jobs in Sri Lanka, and what do they pay?

Most mechanical engineering jobs in Sri Lanka are in manufacturing plants, apparel and textiles, power generation, building services (MEP and HVAC) and, for experienced engineers, the Gulf. A graduate engineer earns about LKR 55,000 to 90,000 a month, rising to LKR 150,000 to 350,000 for senior engineers.

How we checked this

  • We read the Engineering Council, Sri Lanka Act No. 4 of 2017 summary on the ECSL website and the IESL Professional Review rules.
  • We took pay ranges from our mechanical engineer and related salary pages, and Gulf pay from our UAE and Qatar guides.
  • Checked in October 2026. All pay figures are SalaryLK editorial estimates of gross monthly salary.

Which industries hire mechanical engineers in Sri Lanka?

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering fields, so the jobs are spread across many employers. We grouped them into nine areas. The pay column is the typical monthly range from graduate to senior level in that area.

IndustryTypical rolesLKR / month
Manufacturing plants (FMCG, food, cement)Maintenance, plant, utilities and project engineers60,000 - 150,000
Apparel and textilesTextile, industrial and maintenance engineers50,000 - 180,000

Mechanical engineering jobs: take-home pay after EPF and tax

Monthly figures at the middle of each range above, using the 2025/26 and 2026/27 APIT rates (first LKR 150,000 a month tax-free) and the 8% employee EPF deduction. APIT starts to apply at the senior engineer (8+ years) level. The employer also pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top, so a LKR 300,000 salary costs the employer about LKR 345,000 a month.

Do you need ECSL registration to work as a mechanical engineer?

Yes. The Engineering Council, Sri Lanka Act No. 4 of 2017 made registration with the Engineering Council Sri Lanka (ECSL) compulsory for engineering practitioners, and practising without it is an offence.

ECSL categoryWho it is for
Chartered EngineerChartered Engineers of the IESL
Associate EngineerGraduates of IESL-recognised four-year engineering degrees, or IESL Associate Members
Affiliate EngineerGraduates of recognised three-year engineering degrees
Incorporated EngineerIncorporated Engineers of the IIESL
Engineering Diplomate / TechnicianDiploma and vocational qualification holders

If you are still choosing a degree, check that it is IESL accredited or recognised before you enrol. Our engineering faculties in Sri Lanka guide compares the main options.

How do you become a chartered mechanical engineer?

Chartered status comes through the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL). A graduate of an accredited four-year degree joins as an Associate Member (AMIESL). To sit the Professional Review for corporate membership (MIESL), the IESL rules require at least 48 months in total of recognised training and responsible experience: 24 months of each.

We read the rules as at least a four-year project after graduation. Our mechanical engineer salary page notes that chartered engineers tend to earn noticeably more, and chartership also helps when you apply abroad, where employers or engineering societies often verify your qualifications.

Are mechanical engineering jobs abroad worth it?

For many experienced engineers, yes. Our UAE salary guide puts professionals such as engineers at AED 4,000 to 20,000 a month, and the Qatar guide at QAR 4,000 to 15,000. After conversion, the middle and upper parts of those ranges are well above what a senior mechanical engineer earns at home.

The common route is three to five years of MEP, maintenance or plant experience at home, then a Gulf role. Graduates with no experience rarely get good overseas offers, and any agency asking for large fees should be checked with the SLBFE first.

How to land your first mechanical engineering job

  1. Treat industrial training as an interview. Many plants hire graduate engineers from their own trainees.
  2. Register with ECSL early. It shows employers you understand the profession's rules.
  3. Learn the software adverts ask for. AutoCAD, SolidWorks and, for MEP, HVAC load calculation tools.
  4. Apply in batches. Apparel groups, FMCG manufacturers and MEP contractors run graduate intakes.
  5. Plan your training record. Log experience from day one so it counts towards the IESL Professional Review.

Our take: get plant or MEP experience, then move

On the numbers, mechanical engineering pays modestly in the first five years in Sri Lanka. The engineers who do well usually do one of two things: take on plant responsibility early, which leads to plant manager pay of LKR 200,000 to 400,000, or build MEP experience that can be taken to the Gulf.

What we would do first as a new graduate: pick an employer where you will touch real equipment and get signed-off training for the IESL record, even if the salary is slightly lower. A well-documented first three years is worth more than an extra LKR 10,000 a month.

Plant managers earn about LKR 200,000 to 400,000. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates of gross pay; multinational plants pay at the top of each range.

How can a fresh graduate get a mechanical engineering job in Sri Lanka?

Use your industrial training placement as your strongest lead, because many plants hire their own trainees. Apply to graduate engineer intakes at manufacturers, apparel groups and MEP contractors, and register with the Engineering Council (ECSL). Learning AutoCAD or SolidWorks and basic HVAC or maintenance planning makes your CV stand out for entry-level roles.

Is mechanical engineering a good career in Sri Lanka?

It is a stable professional career with a clear path to chartered status and good options abroad, but local starting pay is modest at LKR 55,000 to 90,000 a month. Pay improves sharply once you take on plant or project responsibility. Engineers who add management skills or move into MEP or energy usually earn the most.

Do mechanical engineers need ECSL registration in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Under the Engineering Council, Sri Lanka Act No. 4 of 2017, engineering practitioners must register with the Engineering Council Sri Lanka to practise, and unregistered practice is an offence. Graduates of four-year IESL-accredited or recognised degrees register as Associate Engineers, and chartered engineers register as Chartered Engineers.

How long does it take to become a chartered mechanical engineer in Sri Lanka?

After a four-year accredited degree, you need at least 48 months of recognised training and responsible experience in total, split into 24 months of each, before you can sit the IESL Professional Review for corporate membership. Passing it gives you MIESL and Chartered Engineer status. Realistically, that means at least four years after graduating, and often longer.

Our country guides put professionals such as engineers at about AED 4,000 to 20,000 a month in the UAE and QAR 4,000 to 15,000 in Qatar, depending on experience and employer. MEP and maintenance engineers are the most common hires. Use SLBFE-registered agencies or direct offers from known employers, and check whether housing and transport are included.

Can I get mechanical jobs with a diploma or NVQ in Sri Lanka?

Yes, as an engineering technician or diplomate rather than an engineer. ECSL has separate registration categories for Engineering Diplomates and Engineering Technicians. Diploma holders work as maintenance technicians, draughtsmen, HVAC technicians and supervisors, and some later top up to a degree. Our maintenance technician salary page covers typical pay.
