How does the hotel service charge work?

Most hotels and restaurants add a service charge, commonly 10%, to guest bills. In many hotels it is pooled and shared among staff, often by a points system based on grade, so back-of-house workers get a share too.

What surprises many new workers is that there is no specific law on how it is shared. Department of Labour officials told the Sunday Times in 2024 that Sri Lanka has no law addressing tips and service charge, and that each establishment runs its own system. The same report described deductions for breakages and splits such as half to the kitchen and half to stewards.

In a busy beach or city hotel in season, service charge can be a large part of take-home pay; in the off season it can drop sharply. When you compare offers, we would judge the basic salary first, then ask how service charge was paid per month over the last year.

Do you need a licence to work as a tour guide?

Yes. Guiding tourists legally requires a licence from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). The official Sri Lanka Tourism listing shows four categories:

SLTDA licenceWhat it covers
National tourist guideLarger groups travelling island-wide in coaches with a separate driver
Chauffeur tourist guideSmall groups of 1 to 7 people in a car or van the guide drives
Area guideGuiding within a defined area
Site guideGuiding at a specific site

The National Tourist Guide course at the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) runs five months full time in Colombo, costs LKR 150,000 plus small registration and exam fees, and is open to Sri Lankans aged 18 to 65 with A/L passes and an O/L English credit, or one of the listed alternatives. Our tour guide salary page covers earnings in more detail.

Hotel, travel agency or airline: which suits you?

  • Hotels: easiest to enter, with training on the job. Kitchens offer the steepest pay curve; our chef salary guide shows how far it goes.
  • Travel agencies and tour operators: office hours, ticketing and itinerary work, with commission at some firms.
  • Tour guiding: independent and well tipped in season, but income falls in quiet months.
  • Airlines and airports: structured pay and strict selection, with cabin crew earning the most of the entry jobs.

Students and school leavers can test hotel work first with banquet and event shifts; our part time jobs for school leavers guide lists rates and age rules.

What is the take-home pay for tourism jobs?

Tourism workers on a payroll pay 8% EPF, and the employer adds 12% EPF and 3% ETF. Most hotel and travel jobs fall below the LKR 150,000 monthly APIT threshold, so no income tax is due; hotel managers above it do pay APIT. The table below uses the middle of each range, before service charge and tips.

Tourism jobs: take-home pay after EPF and tax

Monthly figures at the middle of each range above, using the 2025/26 and 2026/27 APIT rates (first LKR 150,000 a month tax-free) and the 8% employee EPF deduction. APIT starts to apply at the hotel manager level. The employer also pays 12% EPF and 3% ETF on top, so a LKR 225,000 salary costs the employer about LKR 258,750 a month.

Can tourism experience get you a job abroad?

Yes, and this is one of the strongest reasons to start in a Sri Lankan hotel. Overseas hotels and resorts prefer workers with local hotel experience.

DestinationHotel staff pay (est.)Extras
Maldives resortsUSD 400 - 750 a month basicFree board; share of 10% service charge
Dubai hotelsAED 1,500 - 2,800 a monthTips and service charge extra

For a Dubai hotel job vacancy in 2026, apply to hotels directly or through an SLBFE-licensed agency, and register with SLBFE before you travel. Anyone asking for several lakhs for a "hotel visa" is a warning sign.

Our take: start in a hotel, move up through a kitchen or front desk

If you are starting with O/L or A/L results and no degree, we think a hotel job is the most open door in Sri Lankan tourism. We would aim for the kitchen or front office over general stewarding, because those two departments have the clearest promotion paths and the strongest demand abroad.

Add a short SLITHM or other hotel school course in your first year; it costs far less than the promotion it helps you win. And treat the service charge as a bonus, not your salary: base your budget on the basic pay.

Tour guiding suits people with strong languages and history knowledge, but we would only go independent after building a network with tour operators, because the off season is long.

Frequently asked questions

What tourism jobs are available in Sri Lanka?

Tourism jobs in Sri Lanka fall into four groups: hotels (stewards, front office, housekeeping, chefs and managers), tours (licensed tour guides and chauffeur guides), travel agencies and tour operators (travel consultants and ticketing staff), and aviation (airport ground staff and cabin crew). Hotels employ the most people and are the easiest to enter without a degree.

How much do tourism jobs in Sri Lanka pay?

By our estimate, entry hotel jobs pay LKR 35,000 to 55,000 a month plus a share of service charge, chefs LKR 50,000 to 100,000, tour guides LKR 35,000 to 80,000 plus tips, travel agents LKR 40,000 to 85,000, cabin crew LKR 80,000 to 180,000 and hotel managers LKR 150,000 to 300,000. These are SalaryLK editorial estimates.

How does the hotel service charge work in Sri Lanka?

Hotels and restaurants commonly add a 10% service charge to bills, and many share it among staff, often on a points system by grade. Department of Labour officials told the Sunday Times in 2024 that Sri Lanka has no law on how tips and service charge are distributed, so each employer sets its own system. Ask how it is calculated before you accept a job.

Do I need a licence to be a tour guide in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Tourist guides must be licensed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). There are four categories: national tourist guides, chauffeur tourist guides, area guides and site guides. The National Tourist Guide course at SLITHM runs five months full time in Colombo and costs LKR 150,000, for Sri Lankans aged 18 to 65 who meet the education rules.

What qualifications do I need for a hotel job in Sri Lanka?

Entry hotel jobs such as steward, room attendant and kitchen helper usually ask for O/L or A/L results and good attitude, with training on the job. A hotel school certificate or diploma, such as those from the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM), makes promotion faster. Front office roles need good English, and other languages help.

Is tourism a good career in Sri Lanka in 2026?

Tourism is a large employer with clear routes upward, especially for chefs, front office staff and managers. The risks are seasonal income, long hours and a history of sharp downturns when tourist arrivals fall. Many workers use local hotel experience to move to the Maldives or the Gulf, where pay is several times higher.

How can I get a Dubai hotel job vacancy in 2026?

Apply directly to UAE hotels and hotel groups online, or use an agency licensed by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE). Our estimate for waiter and hotel staff pay in Dubai is AED 1,500 to 2,800 a month, with tips and service charge extra. Register with SLBFE before you travel and never pay large sums for a visa.

How much do Maldives resort jobs pay Sri Lankans?

Our estimate for resort housekeeping and food and beverage staff is USD 400 to 750 a month in basic pay, usually with free accommodation and meals on the island. Maldivian resorts also share a 10% service charge with staff, which can add a lot in good months. Use a licensed agency or apply to resorts directly.

Can students get part time tourism jobs in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Hotel banquet and event shifts, restaurant work and seasonal hotel jobs are common part-time options, paid by the shift or day. Workers must be at least 16, and night work is only open to those aged 18 and above. December to April, the main west and south coast season, is when hotels hire most extra staff.
