High Demand Jobs in Sri Lanka 2026

Ten jobs employers keep hiring for, with the survey and migration data that shows it, and what each one pays

Updated • 9 FAQs

Which jobs are in high demand in Sri Lanka in 2026?

The jobs in highest demand are software engineers, QA engineers and business analysts in IT, and skilled trades, caregivers and hotel staff for work abroad and tourism. In the SLASSCOM 2024 survey, 70% of IT firms planned to hire software engineers, and more than 300,000 Sri Lankans left for foreign jobs in 2025.

How we checked this

  • We read the SLASSCOM Employability Skills Survey 2024 and the DCS Labour Force Survey report for Q1 2026.
  • We used the SLBFE annual report for 2024, CBSL's Q3 2025 migration bulletin and SLBFE figures for 2025.
  • We checked all of these in October 2026. Pay ranges come from our own salary pages and are SalaryLK editorial estimates.

The 10 high demand jobs, and the evidence for each

We only listed a job if we could point to a published number showing demand. That ruled out some popular guesses, such as "digital marketing" or "AI jobs", where we found opinions but no hard data for Sri Lanka.

Five of the ten are IT jobs and five are jobs where most of the demand comes from abroad or from tourism. That split is the real story of the Sri Lankan job market in 2026.

What does the official data say about demand?

The Department of Census and Statistics runs the Labour Force Survey every quarter. For January to March 2026 it reported a labour force of 8.41 million, an unemployment rate of 3.7%, and about 311,000 people looking for work. Services employ 50.4% of working people, industry 25.9% and agriculture 23.7%.

The number we found most telling: of those 311,000 unemployed people, about 158,000 had A/L or higher qualifications. At the same time, 95% of the IT companies in the SLASSCOM survey said they struggled to find recruits with the right technical skills. Demand exists, but for specific skills, not for qualifications in general.

We also looked for a national labour demand or vacancy survey, which would measure open jobs directly. We could not find a recent edition published online, so the LFS (who is working) and the SLASSCOM and SLBFE data (who is being hired) are the best evidence available.

Which IT jobs are in highest demand?

The SLASSCOM Employability Skills Survey 2024 asked 37 IT companies which roles they employ now and which they plan to hire for in the next 18 months. The sample is small, but it is the most recent industry survey with role-level detail.

RoleFirms employing nowFirms planning to hire
Software engineering92%70%
Software quality assurance65%51%
Business analysis59%49%
QA automation-46%
UI engineering54%-
Software project management54%-

A dash means the survey summary did not report that figure. The same report puts the sector's workforce at over 80,000 people. If you are weighing IT routes, our highest paying IT jobs guide shows where these roles lead, and the computer engineer salary page covers the hardware and network side.

Which jobs are in demand abroad?

Foreign employment is the other big source of hiring. The SLBFE recorded 314,786 departures in 2024. By 19 December 2025 another 300,191 people had left, 184,085 men and 116,106 women. The main destinations in 2025 were:

CountryDepartures in 2025Typical jobs
Kuwait75,200Domestic work, drivers, construction, services
UAE57,037Construction, hospitality, retail, professionals
Israel12,728Caregiving, agriculture, construction
Romania12,180Not broken down in the source
Japan10,717Nursing care, food service, manufacturing (SSW)
South Korea6,272Manufacturing, fishing, agriculture (EPS)

The CBSL classed 76.5% of departures in the first nine months of 2025 as skilled and 80.8% went to the Middle East. That is why a trade certificate, such as an NVQ in electrical installation, is worth more than it looks on local pay.

Does high demand mean a high salary?

Only in IT. Software engineers, BAs and project managers combine strong demand with fast pay growth. In the trades and caregiving, the demand is mainly overseas, and local pay stays modest: our electrician salary page puts local pay at LKR 40,000 to 85,000 a month, and caregivers earn LKR 30,000 to 80,000.

Tourism sits in between. Record arrivals of 2.36 million in 2025 mean hotels are hiring, and a chef starts at LKR 50,000 to 100,000, but pay depends heavily on the property and service charge. For jobs ranked by pay as well as demand, see our best jobs in Sri Lanka 2026 ranking.

Engineering and finance: steady, not booming

Engineering and finance jobs did not make the top ten because we found no recent published figure showing a surge in hiring. That does not mean they are weak careers. Manufacturing, apparel and building services still hire engineers every year; our mechanical engineering jobs guide covers who hires. Banks and payment companies are building digital teams, covered in fintech jobs in Sri Lanka.

Government recruitment is a separate world, with exams and gazetted vacancies. Our government jobs in Sri Lanka guide explains how it works.

Our take: follow the hiring plans, not the hype

The data points one way for graduates: software engineering, QA and business analysis have the most consistent hiring plans, and QA is the easiest of the three to enter. For people without a degree, the strongest demand is overseas, so the useful move is a recognised trade or caregiving qualification plus a legal SLBFE-registered route.

What we would watch out for: lists of "future jobs" with no source. If a job is in demand, someone is publishing hiring numbers for it. Before you pay for a course, find ten current adverts for the job it leads to.

Frequently asked questions

What are the high demand jobs in Sri Lanka?

The jobs with the clearest evidence of demand are software engineers, QA engineers, business analysts, UI engineers and IT project managers inside Sri Lanka, plus skilled construction trades, caregivers and hospitality staff for work abroad and for tourism. The SLASSCOM 2024 survey and SLBFE departure data are the two strongest sources. Pay ranges for each job are in the table on this page.

What is the most demanded job in Sri Lanka in 2026?

Software engineer. In the SLASSCOM Employability Skills Survey 2024, 92% of responding IT companies employed software engineers and 70% planned to hire more within 18 months, far ahead of any other role. For work abroad, the largest single destination is Kuwait, which received about 75,200 Sri Lankan workers in 2025, ahead of the UAE with about 57,000.

Which high demand jobs in Sri Lanka do not need a degree?

Skilled trades such as electrician, plumber and welder are in steady demand in the Gulf and need NVQ-level training rather than a degree. Caregiving for Israel or Japan, hotel and kitchen work for the tourism industry, and QA testing for people who can show practical skills are other options. Always use SLBFE-registered agencies or official government programmes for overseas jobs.

Which jobs are in high demand abroad for Sri Lankans?

In 2025 the top destinations were Kuwait, the UAE, Israel, Romania, Japan and South Korea. Most Gulf jobs are in construction, domestic work, driving, hospitality and services. Israel recruits caregivers and farm workers, Japan uses the Specified Skilled Worker programme, and Korea hires manufacturing workers through EPS. The CBSL classed 76.5% of departures in January to September 2025 as skilled.

Is there a shortage of IT workers in Sri Lanka?

Employers say there is a shortage of skilled ones. In the SLASSCOM 2024 survey, 95% of companies said it was hard to find new employees with the right technical skills, and 83.7% struggled to hire people with the experience they wanted. The bigger problem is skill level rather than head count, so graduates with real project work still get hired.

Does high demand mean high salary in Sri Lanka?

Not always. IT roles combine demand and good pay, with software engineers starting at LKR 60,000 to 120,000 a month. But electricians and caregivers are in high demand mainly abroad, and local pay is LKR 30,000 to 85,000. The demand for those jobs is a reason to train for overseas work, not a sign that local pay will rise quickly.

What is the unemployment rate in Sri Lanka in 2026?

The Department of Census and Statistics reported an unemployment rate of 3.7% for the first quarter of 2026, with about 311,000 people unemployed out of a labour force of 8.41 million. About half of the unemployed had A/L or higher qualifications, which shows that demand is uneven: some qualifications are oversupplied while employers struggle to fill skilled roles.

Which courses lead to high demand jobs in Sri Lanka?

Software engineering, IT and data courses lead to the roles with the strongest local hiring plans. Nursing and caregiving courses lead to overseas demand, and NVQ courses in electrical, plumbing and welding trades lead to Gulf jobs. Hospitality and culinary courses fit the tourism recovery. Pick a course by checking real adverts for the job first, not the course brochure.

Are government jobs in high demand in Sri Lanka?

Government jobs are in high demand from applicants, not from employers. Recruitment is limited and competitive, with fixed scales under PA Circular 10/2025 and the Rs. 17,800 cost of living allowance. Teaching, nursing and health posts are filled through periodic exams and gazettes. Our government jobs guide lists the main recruitment routes and pay scales.
